I'm a current student, starting from this year's september. All I thought about when I heard this news was the £9000 a year, not the effects of it like you said in your article. I do see that students need to have a more efficient systsem, but this isnt the way to go about it.
My course is a 3 year course, with one year extra being used for a years job placement (4 years in all). What happens to me?
Martin, there must be something you can do to stop this madness, a MSE petition? TV articles? :)

I wholly sympathise with this issue, however I think we have to put it into perspective. There are swingeing cuts across the whole of society, Wholesale job reductions, cuts in the NHS and police and also a radical rethink of the benefits system.

It is hard to justify why students, who have yet to contribute in any tangible way to society (apart from increasing the sales of lentils and beer :D), should be exempt from the pain that the rest of the country are undergoing.

I suspect that an MSE petition would provide minor amusement at the houses of commons, almost as much as a student strike. TV articles funded by whom?

Its a sad fact that the general perception of the public as it relates to students is a gang of workshy youngsters spending 3 years at University having a great time, getting high of drugs and alcohol and studying a couple of hours a day, you are not going to get much sympathy. I am aware that's not true, (you can blame programmes such as 'They young ones' for this perception :D) a large percentage of them, but stereotyping is king in this world of ours.

That was my point in the other discussion. Not everyone is capable of going to university and yet people have to pay taxes which goes towards the funding of it.

My brother pays his taxes yet will never likely go to university. Why should be subsidise my education?

Taxes will always exist. Forget about the reasons.

Lastly, 9k a year is laughable. Far too much for how little you get.

    There is no justification.

I think the theory of 'age' and not able to contribute can explain that.

There is no justification in these fees. The real criminals are Mp's.

    - You only get cosmetic surgery in special cases (for example, you can't get your boobs upgraded from C -> DD)
    - Of course military is a basic! It's country protection. You really want the next Hitler to invade our country?

You just have something against tories to be honest. You aren't even making resonable arguments against me, just venting.

For starters, in this new structure, why can only the "well off" go to university? Loans are available to all (within reason, no second degrees etc.), and grants are available to those on low income. So how will the poorer lose out in all of this?

Please point out to me where I commented that the poor would lose out under the new structure? I have not made any comments about this, I was merely responding to your post about it being unfair for taxpayers money to be spent on higher education. I don't think you are in a position to comment on my 'venting' ,when you are clearly doing the same yourself.
yes I have something against the tories' ideology, I am human.

Conversely there is no justification in the taxpayer funding an individual doing a degree in fashion or Art. If you want a freebie university education from society there has to be some form of payback

A few dodgy pictures and nicely designed frocks don't quite cut it :-)

So the Military is a basic, is it? Cosmetic surgery on the NHS, is that a basic? Bailing out the banks when they screw up and lose obscene amounts of money, is that a basic?
If tax money is only meant to cover the 'basics', then why aren't the likes of David Cameron and his cronies on minimum wage?

If health care is a basic requirement, then who is going to provide it when there is a shortage of qualified health professionals, as only the very well off can afford to go to university? Who is going to teach in schools?

The bit in bold. If that's not indicating the poor would lose out then I don't know what it does indicate!
  • There was a time when university was for the academic elite. Now, like everything else, it's dumbed down and every kid thinks they have an entitlement to go and have fun for 3 years, afterwards "feeling really proud of themselves".

So I have no problems with them paying for this indulgence. IF it really is worthwhile economically, then they will have no problems paying back loans or gaining sponsorship. If they've got parents rich enough to pay - fine if that's how they want to spend their wealth.

Perhaps people will think more carefully about such a decision if THEY are paying for it. Also universities will be held more to account if students are the ones paying the fees.

As for Margaret Thatcher - kudos to her for doing a science degree!

As far as I know Scottish university is still free of tuition fee. So what prevent english or welsh student to study in Scotland for free then ?.
