As far As I am aware for full time study, students have class contact of 12 hours a week (e.g. 6 Modules/year).
On the final year it could be as a lot of it is self Study such as dissertation, etc
ADINDASShould we also be looking at value for money. 5 hours a week "tuition" on my son's course, and finished by end of April.0 -

Do you wear clothes? Do you have furniture or curtains or wallpaper in your home? A Monet reproduction hanging in the hallway? Do you watch television or go to the cinema? Do you visit websites or play computer games? Do you have a record collection and a favourite album sleeve? Do you have professionally taken pictures of your children on your desk at work?
Let me guess, you think Van Gogh and Picasso are 'acceptable' artists but that more recent art is worthless? You were appalled that the Taliban banned music but you think music students are scroungers?
The arts may not be essential for survival, but I think a society without them would be a sadder place for everybody.
Actually I have an arts degree myself, which I acquired purely from an interest perspective. I love books, I adore music, however I do not believe that the taxpayer should fund education which provides facilities for the select few.
Van Gogh I have never liked in any case, however much modern art is pretentious. In the Tate gallery they have a cot surrounded with razor wire which they state is evocative of the sufferings of political prisoners (give me a break) and a wall with extracts of poetry reproduced on it - how is that art?
Yes I do wear clothes (most of which are produced in sweat shops in foreign countries). I have computer games, I do have a TV, I watch films and listen to music of all genres, however I pay through the nose for all of these facilities.
I'm quite happy to fund the budding actresses, games designers and TV producers through university using my taxes if they subsequently provide me with their services gratis. At the moment I appear to be paying twice :rotfl:0 -

They pay for everything required: the lecturer's time in both giving the lesson and preparing for it, the library resources, the student union and their staff fees, the utility bill for the rooms used, the computing facilities, etc, etc.
Why is money being spent on these extras especially in Scotland where it's all paid for by the state, contrast that with someone taking care of their own education or an apprentice where he has his wages docked from training.0 -

University libraries and staff salaries are "extras"? What planet are you on?0 -
Funny you missed out the other examples or are you claiming everything that gets paid for by the public is spent directly on education and couldn't be better spent elsewhere.0

I'm sorry, but in what way are those 'extras'? Have you any idea how much preparation (and paperwork) is required just to run a class? Where are you going to have lectures if the room cannot be booked, never mind being lit or heated? Believe, me, being in an unlit, unheated stone building in the depths of a west coast Scottish winter is not fun! In what way is the library an extra? Where are the books and articles going to be stored? Who is going to buy them? Do you know how much it costs to provide access to online journal articles per year?
I could go on if you want.0 -
