I've got a couple of wonderful black fabric bags from home and bargain that go everywhere with me. Haven't taken a supermarket carrier in ages.

Trouble is, we use carriers for our kitchen bin, so I have been known to go to tescos and grab a large handful out of the "carrier bag recycling" bin thing. OH was so embarrassed!!!

I've also got one of the neighbours to give me all her old carriers....she's an eighty year old widow, so how she gets through so many I'll never know.
  • I try to remember to take my own bags but am prone to forgetting abit like the cashiers and my green points, was told by one cashier to go to CS after completion of transaction but queue huge couldn't be bothered. I must be more proactive at the till. At home I reuse in bins around the house, nappy sacks and for wellies, bucket and spades etc. in the car. I try my best but I'm not perfect.
  • you british are lucky, over here in ireland we have to pay 15 cent (about 23p) for each plastic bag, our government introduced a plastic bag levy in 2003 to reduce pollution; it has worked but they are increasing it to 23 cent:mad: (about 30p)
because some local shops and off licences dont charge for the bags even though they are risking a 3000 euro fine for not charging.

Hope you don't go to my Tesco. I only put in their recycle bin bags which can't be used for anything else. To make sure OH doesn't take the wrong bags at home I tear them up to make them totally useless as containers lol

What happens to all the boxes now? I remember when I used to go shopping with my mum and the Co-op had a corner just full of cardboard boxes for customers to use. My mum rarely used a bag.

I have a 70p bag from Asda and a 99p one from Lidl's. Great bags but I often forget to take them with me.

A lot of supermarkets now have their goods delivered on huge pallets and saran wrapped to keep it all together or in plastic trays that can be slotted into tray stack and wheeled out on the shop floor when needed. Boxes seem to be a thing of the past....

By the way you don't just get 1 green point for each bag it depends on what bag you are using, the minimum is 1 point. eg
    poly carrier bag
    1 point.
    full bag for life
    2 points.
if shopping is put below pushchair---3 points.
    box
    up to 4 points.
    trolley bag
    3 points.

I've only ever been awarded one green point for the bag for life

I emailed Tesco and has a reply
I can confirm that a Tesco bag for life should be awarded, when used 1 point.

they are not really supposed to be left out as they represent a fire risk, they are meant to be disposed of as soon as they are empty. i work for tesco and this is my stores policy
