So what would you give for a cloth shopping bag, which is what I use most of the time? I have a selection of varying sizes, they're smaller than trolley bags, probably take about the same amount as a Bag for Life.

BTW, wish you worked for any of our local Tescos, there's one I won't go in at all because their Customer Service is so appalling!

Sorry for not replying before this as I was away.
It would depend how much shopping you had in your cloth bag, it would be a minimum of 1 point but if it was full it would be 2 points.
I have worked for Tesco for over 14 years, I don't know why all Tesco employees don't do this as we are all issued with a card that tells us how many points to give:) Hope this helps.

  • For those of you not using strong re-usable bags. A few things to consider:
    (from plasticbageconomics.com)

"The environmental damage caused by plastic bags is enormous. Plastic makes up 80% of the volume of litter on roads, parks, and beaches and makes up 90% of floating litter in the ocean (BEC). In every square mile of ocean there are over 46,000 pieces of plastic. This puts an enormous strain on the environment. The little pieces of plastic act as a sort of sponge for chemicals. They soak up a million fold greater concentration of such deadly compounds as PCBs and DDE (a breakdown product of the notorious insecticide DDT), than the surrounding seawater (Reusablebags.com). Marine life then eats these pieces and dies. It is estimated that over a 100,000 different birds, seals and whales die every year (Reusablebags.com). After the animal dies its carcass decomposes and the plastic is free to roam the ocean and kill again.

When plastic bags find their way into the ocean they kill endangered turtles. Plastic bags are injested by turtles who confuse them for jellyfish, their primary food source. The turtles then suffocate.

Plastic bags wrap themselves around living coral and quickly kill them. This has become a huge problem for Australia, whose Great Barrier Reef is being threatened by little white bags of death. Plastic bags trap seals and sea lions, prevent whales from digesting and kill birds by the thousands.

Despite what some economist tell you, you can not put a price on the environment. Many of these animals have existence values that are immesurable. If people realized the destruction that is done to the environment or the amount of animals that die from their over consumption of plastic bags, I'm sure they would switch to a reusable bag."

The steps we need to save the environment are going to increase drastically in the next couple of decades. Recycling is the least that we can do.

Its one of the easiest things you can do for the environment - how much effort can it take to remember your own bags?

I don't take my own bags to tesco. I have seen others do it and I suppose that in principle I agree with it but they are so flimsy that they are ususally in tatters after one use let alone reuse. I do take them to the recycling and I do use some for rubbish, doggie doo bags and for general transporting of things to and from school.

I keep thinking about getting an Onya bag but have not had any luck in finding one. As it folds down small I would keep it in my handbag.

I always refuse carriers when I already have one with space in or if the item is small enough to go in my handbag.

By the way you don't just get 1 green point for each bag it depends on what bag you are using, the minimum is 1 point. eg
    poly carrier bag
    1 point.
    full bag for life
    2 points.
if shopping is put below pushchair---3 points.
    box
    up to 4 points.
    trolley bag
    3 points.

I was talking to the lady on the till the other day after I had told her how many bags I had (as I always have to do) and she was saying that she was supposed to ask but kept forgetting because so few people were interested, even with the extra points. She said that she asked everyone for the first few days, but the response was so negative that it really put her off.
Obviously, not all stores are as keen as yours is!
  • I know that not all the stores are the same, as I have found in my experience when I shop in a different Tesco store to my own. I think all stores should operate the same as the company policy is the company policy.
My store is classed as a Metro Store although it's quite large for a Metro Store as it has 12 main checkouts, 4 tandem (basket) checkouts and 4 basket self-service checkouts. At the moment our store alone is saving over 5,000 carrier bags each week.
I have worked for Tesco for over 14 years.:)

  • Only bought one thing in tescos today and reused a bag but she would not give me the point cos the bag was not full, but I could have used a new one !

You should have still got the minimum of 1 point as you were using your own bag, we are even told to give 1 point if the customer takes their purchase in their hands i.e. a drink and a sandwich. I think it's a disgrace what some of the stores are doing as I think they are making up the rules to suit themselves.:naughty:
