Tesco - do you reuse your carriers?

  • I don't take my own bags to tesco. I have seen others do it and I suppose that in principle I agree with it but they are so flimsy that they are ususally in tatters after one use let alone reuse. I do take them to the recycling and I do use some for rubbish, doggie doo bags and for general transporting of things to and from school.

I keep thinking about getting an Onya bag but have not had any luck in finding one. As it folds down small I would keep it in my handbag.

I always refuse carriers when I already have one with space in or if the item is small enough to go in my handbag.

I bought some bags for life which last ages and one of those big blue bags they sell with handles for light stuff.... I always say straight away to the checkout girl please don't pack for me I have my own bags thanks and they usually ask how many and put the points on straight away.... I usually say 10 even if I am only using 5 they don't check......:rotfl:

I have never heard an assistant ask if I had my own bags. Our store does however have a big sign on the exit door stating how many green points had been given out and how many bags saved/reused. I must pop in 3 times a week and never been asked once !! (its on the way to school (and the way back!!))

I always reuse bags when i'm shopping,At Tesco i hand my clubcard over before they put my shopping through and tell them then that i will be using my own bags, i have to say my local tesco is really good at giving you points and tend to give you extra if you use bags for life rather that standard size carriers.
  • Hi Everyone, I have worked for Tesco for years (14+) and in our store which I may add all stores should be doing as it's company policy we are told to ask at the start if the customer is using any of their own bags today as well as all the other questions we have to ask!!!!!!!!
    1. Hello/Morning/etc.
    2. Do you have a clubcard.
    3. Would you like a hand/help with your packing.
    4. Are you using any of your own bags today.
And if they would like help to pack and they have their own bags you pack some for them, but you don't add the green points on untill the end so you know how many bags they are using. Some customers aren't honest.
It is all part of our S O S Training which means
Say Hello, Offer Help, Say Goodbye.
By the way you don't just get 1 green point for each bag it depends on what bag you are using, the minimum is 1 point. eg
    poly carrier bag
    1 point.
    full bag for life
    2 points.
if shopping is put below pushchair---3 points.
    box
    up to 4 points.
    trolley bag
    3 points.
If the customer has a full Tesco shopping trolley and is taking it straight out to their car without bags you can give them 10 or 20 green points depending if its a big trolley or not.
But I think that not all stores are doing what we do, mores the pity.
But I would like to add, if this scheme doesn't work or isn't successful enough the government is putting a 10 pence tax on each carrier bag taken in stores. And the stores won't be getting a share of the money like some customers think they will, we will see what happens then I bet everybody uses their own bags then. And I have always used my own bags even before Tesco gave points.
    I hope this helps someone.

I re-use all carrier bags again and again. I always have a couple of them neatly folded at the bottom of my handbag and leave them there for emergencies. Other than that I always bring several with me when I go shopping.

The time eventually comes when they either break entirely, but if only the handle breaks then I use them as rubbish bin liners. Nothing is wasted in my home and any re-usable item is worked to death.

    :)

I have just startted reusing my shopping bags at tesco...as opposed to just using them for bin bags and doggy do!! I have a mixture of bags for life, a green fabric asda one (very well designed with bottle strap thingys on the inside and it was only 50p) and a cool bag. I get 1 point for each carrier and usually 3 points for my cool bag which is usually full as the chilled and frozen stuff goes in it.
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!
:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!

Is the government really going to tax bags or is it another idea they're simply mooting about? I can't wait for the day when a plastic bag tax is brought in!!!

So what would you give for a cloth shopping bag, which is what I use most of the time? I have a selection of varying sizes, they're smaller than trolley bags, probably take about the same amount as a Bag for Life.

BTW, wish you worked for any of our local Tescos, there's one I won't go in at all because their Customer Service is so appalling!
