Bringing forward the clue for ease of reference. Hope nobody minds.

Hope you enjoy your round the world trip Reniannen. I don't have Google Earth installed. I think OH would go mad if I installed anything else on this computer.

I might be missing something but I have 2 issues with this

    1. What does the 'sad departure across wild seas' refer to? I know Lisbon is at about 38 degrees Latititude, but lots of places are?
[STRIKE]2. How does it fit 'far away to the North' as Lisbon isn't north of Britain or America?[/STRIKE] sorry I see you're taking it from it being 38 Degrees North
I still have no idea on sad departure or victory, but the friends far to the north, to me, is referring to the UK, Portugal's northern allies since the 1300's
    Great work :)

I too like the final answer but cant make it connect at all. cert the trickiest one ive seen out of the 3 so far :D

As far as the spoiler answer, its taupe colour? link

The scale is the only worry, but comparatively I guess its quite modest?

The sea trip is really baffling.I thought of the Titanic, esp as its destination was NY but could make nothing link esp as the sea was v calm etc and not the baltic!. Wild Sargosso sea i had a play with but again utter tripe :P :D
I agree re scale to, still struggling on that although I did find it referred to as
    The Bath Needle

I still keep thinking that there might be an anagram in there somewhere (but pehaps I've just got a fixation with that), but it is more difficult looking for anagrams of foreign place names than it is for UK ones.

Another thing that we have not tied in is Victory.

Agreed on the anagram, I keep thinking there should be one.

OK - I have found Victory AND Liberty
    http://www.hotelprincipelisboa.com/lisbon.html

OR A SAD DEPARTURE is almost an anagram of Restauradores

    Restauradores Square:
Situated in the south extreme of charming Liberdade Avenue, the Restauradores Square is considered to be the starting point of the expansion of the city to the north.
One of the busiest areas in the Lisboa centre, linking the Baixa Pombalina to the Marquês de Pombal Square, Restauradores Square has as symbol a monument in form of Obelisk, erected in 1886, that commemorates the restoration of 1640 of the Independence of Portugal from Spain. In the pedestal of this monument there are two bronze images, representing the Victory and the Liberty.
The strong point of this Square is, undoubtedly, its architecture, with diverse buildings characteristic and historical buildings, such as the Foz Palace (currently a Tourist Office), the Orion Eden Hotel (ancient Eden cinema), the small bandstand, the elegant Avenue Palace Hotel, among many others, that render this Plaza a quite special charm, inherited since the 19th century, when it was a mandatory passage in the distinct bourgeois walks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restauradores_Square has it as Independence and Victory, but Independence could = Liberty

I am sure that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Restoration_War has something to do with it, but haven't found it yet

Re the posts above...that obilisk is the one I was referring to here, marking the independence of Portugal from Spain:

Or a sad departure across wild sea at 38 degrees (here's where I go wobbly - does this mean Lisbon (around 38 degrees north) - possibly referring to yet another obilsk - the one erected to denote the end of Spanish domination of Portugal?)

I wonder if its either the anagram of or a sad departure (as per above poster)...or if the letters SAD stand for something like Spanish something departure or something that illustrates Portugal's indpendence.

Anyhow, it's another obilisk and that is what the whole riddle seems to be about...the washington one, the Lisbon one (i think that whole para is about the Lisbon one and the stature of liberty is wrong) ...then leading to the bath one.

Thanks, I didn't realise the significance of the obelisk so didn't know why you had said Lisbon :o

the Portuguese name for the square is Praça dos Restauradores

which is an anagram of 'a sad departure across' :)

huge well done everyone, I was clueless :T

P.S. I think the Bath obelisk is by far the smallest of the three and I would say it's relatively modest ;)
eta - Beau Nash Obelisk is 21m (70ft) from here, Lisbon obelisk is 30m from here and the Washington monument is 169.29 m and is the world's tallest true obelisk from here

P.P.S I can't seem to get onto the site today, is it just me?

    Well done everyone.

To save me reading the whole of the thread through again, can anyone tell me if we managed to tie Frederick, Prince of Wales in to Portugal?

I am happy now that it all seems to fit and as Reniannen says, the scale is modest compared with the other monuments in the riddle.

I have been able to get on to the site alright. Reniannen did you re-register, after the hacking attempt?

I still have not had a reply to my email of the subject of email addresses being divulged.

    Not as such, no...

this is how I read it all fits together...

IN A CITY OF SPAS WE FIND IN ANY CLONE
A PARTNER, ONCE CAPITAL, NOW PRONE
    - Budapest is widely known as the Ciy of Spa's, A partner refers to a twinned city. New York City is twinned with Budapest, and its initials are in ANY CLONE. New York City was once the capital of the United States, and now prone may refer to the destruction of the World Trade Centre, some of the worlds tallest buildings.

TO LAMENT ITS STATUS LOST TO SOUTHERN RIVAL
WHOSE STELE ENSURES ITS FATHERS SURVIVAL
    - Washington DC is now the capital of the United States, and is South of New York City. There is a stele or obelisk here, dedicated to general George Washington, hailed as the father of his country. This was erected in 1885.

NEXT YEAR VICTORY AND LIBERTY WAS RAISED TO PLEASE
OR A SAD DEPARTURE ACROSS WILD SEA AT 38 DEGREES
    - In Restorers Square, Lisbon, Portugal (Praça dos Restauradores in Portuguese, which is an anagram of OR A SAD DEPARTURE ACROSS) another Obelisk was erected in 1886 that commemorates the restoration of 1640 of the Independence of Portugal from Spain, at the base of this obelisk are images of Victory and Independance (Liberty). Both Washington DC and Lisbon have a lattitude of 38o North.

OLDEST OF FRIENDS, FAR AWAY TO THE NORTH
    - One of Portugals oldest allies is the United Kingdom, which is north of Portugal.

    A POW ONCE SALLIED FORTH
    - This is the only bit we seem to be struggling to link. the POW is obviously Frederick, Prince of Wales - but where did he sally forth to? I can find nothing linking him to Portugal.

WAS FETED BY A BEAU AND INSCRIBED BY A POPE
    - Fredericks visit to Bath, Avon, UK was celebrated with an Obelisk paid for by Richard Beau Nash and an inscription by Alexander Pope.
IN MEMORY OF HONOURS CONFERR'D AND IN GRATITUDE FOR BENEFITS BESTOW'D IN THIS CITY BY HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS FREDERICK PRINCE OF WALES AND HIS ROYAL CONSORT IN THE YEAR MDCCXXXVIII THIS OBELISK IS ERECTED BY RICHARD NASH ESQ

MODEST IN SCALE AND COLOURED TAUPE!
    - it is the smallest of the 3 Obelisks we have visted and is stone (taupe) coloured, obviously.

    WHAT AND WHERE AM I?

Queen Square Obelisk (The Bath Needle), Bath, Avon, UK

lol argh beat me by a minute Mr Bond!

I've written out the full working as we've done before.

    IN A CITY OF SPAS

Budapest is known as a city of spas

    ...WE FIND IN ANY CLONE
A PARTNER, ONCE CAPITAL, NOW PRONE

TO LAMENT ITS STATUS LOST TO SOUTHERN RIVAL

Budapest is twinned with New York and NYC is found in the middle of ANY CLONE. New York was capital until 1790, before Washington DC which is south of New York

WHOSE STELE ENSURES ITS FATHERS SURVIVAL

The Washington Monument in Washington DC is an obelisk, occasionally known as a stele, erected to commemorate George Washington, known as the father of the United States of America.

NEXT YEAR VICTORY AND LIBERTY WAS RAISED TO PLEASE
OR A SAD DEPARTURE ACROSS WILD SEA AT 38 DEGREES

The Washington Monument was dedicated in 1885. In 1886 an obelisk with statues of victory and liberty on either side was raised in Lisbon in Restauradores Square, which commemorates the Restoration War. In Portuguese the square is called Praça dos Restauradores which is an anagram of 'or a sad departure across'. Both Washington and Lisbon are on the 38th parallel north line of latitude.

OLDEST OF FRIENDS, FAR AWAY TO THE NORTH

The Anglo-Portuguese alliance dates back to 1373 and England is North of Portugal. A renewal of the traditional alliance was one of the main factors which brought an end to the Restoration War (source).

    A POW ONCE SALLIED FORTH
WAS FETED BY A BEAU AND INSCRIBED BY A POPE
MODEST IN SCALE AND COLOURED TAUPE!

I find this link tenuous too, it seems more likely we should link Portugal with Wales, Hanover or Frederick himself rather than England. There's no doubt that it's the right answer though.

Frederick, Prince of Wales once 'sallied forth' and visited Bath in 1783, which is commemorated by an obelisk in Queen's Square. The obelisk was paid for by Richard Beau Nash and the inscription was written by Alexander Pope. The obelisk is roughly taupe coloured and is pretty modest in scale compared to the other 2 obelisks mentioned in the clue.

    WHAT AND WHERE AM I?

The Queens Square Obelisk, also known as the Beau Nash Obelisk or Bath Needle in Bath

    399px-Queen_Square_obelisk_Bath.jpg

so... anyone came across this one before? It's only been unsolved for 3 years :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
