I have found this table:-
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001796.html
according to which, New York is at 40 degrees, 47 minutes0 -
You just beat me to it. Looking at the same table, Washington is at 38 degrees, 53 minutes.0

It's still not much help though is it :-) I still don't get the connection - when they give the answer on the site, do they epxlain the riddle?0
-
I think that this is only the second time that they have done it. Last time's treasure hunt can be found here:-
http://treasurehuntcash.com/previous-clues
We solved that one between us (our musings are here):-
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2793826
and I think the fact that so many people got it right has made them make this month's more difficult.0 -
just read through the thread properly and worked out where everyone's coming from. I definitely think you're right SheepAreEvil, well done
Tried searching for different keywords with Beau, Pope and inscribed and never found it.
None the wiser as to the connection either. I keep coming up with the San Francisco Bay area at 38 degrees. Sir Francis Drake is supposed to have harboured in Drakes Bay which is at 38 degrees. Doesn't fit in with the 1886 date if it is to do with him but I'm not sure about that anyway0 -

and Lisbon is 38o 44' N 9o 9' W
So both Washington and Lisbon are at 38o
so, taking thetoothfairy's previous post... (my edits in italics)
In a city of spas (Budapest?) we find in any clone (New York)
A partner (ie is twinned with Budapest), once capital (of America), now prone (Could mean flattened, i.e. Twin Towers)
To lament its status lost to southern rival (Washington D.C.)
Whose stele (Washington monument, fininshed 1885) ensures its fathers survival
Next year victory and liberty (1886, the statue of liberty was finised in New York) was raised to please
Or a sad departure across wild sea at 38 degrees (here's where I go wobbly - does this mean Lisbon (around 38 degrees north) - possibly referring to yet another obilsk - the one erected to denote the end of Spanish domination of Portugal?) - (Washington D.C. and Lisbon Portugal are both situated on the 38th Parallel North.)
Oldest of friends, far away to the north (referring to friendship between England and Portugal...was their one?!) (Correct - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugal_–_United_Kingdom_relations Anglo-Portuguese Alliance AD:1373
A POW (Referring to Frederick, Prince of Wales) once sallied forth
Was feted by a beau (Beau Nash) and inscribed by a pope (Alexander Pope)
Modest in scale and coloured taupe (brown coloured) (the answer at #61)
What and where am I?
has anyone got that middle bit sorted??
My only issue now is that I cannot link specifically to Frederick, PoW.Not as green as I am cabbage looking0 -

I might be missing something but I have 2 issues with this
1. What does the 'sad departure across wild seas' refer to? I know Lisbon is at about 38 degrees Latititude, but lots of places are?
[STRIKE]2. How does it fit 'far away to the North' as Lisbon isn't north of Britain or America?[/STRIKE] sorry I see you're taking it from it being 38 Degrees North0 -
Great work
I too like the final answer but cant make it connect at all. cert the trickiest one ive seen out of the 3 so far
As far as the spoiler answer, its taupe colour? link
The scale is the only worry, but comparatively I guess its quite modest?
The sea trip is really baffling.I thought of the Titanic, esp as its destination was NY but could make nothing link esp as the sea was v calm etc and not the baltic!. Wild Sargosso sea i had a play with but again utter tripe :P0 -
I still keep thinking that there might be an anagram in there somewhere (but pehaps I've just got a fixation with that), but it is more difficult looking for anagrams of foreign place names than it is for UK ones.
Another thing that we have not tied in is Victory.0 -

lol I did that, it's Wide Sargasso Sea
sorry this is totally off topic but I have a tv programme on in the background about Norman MacCaig, and as I read Sargasso sea in your post someone started reading a poem by him called Sargasso Sea
I'm going round the globe on Google Earth at 38 degrees, it's quite fun, currently in the mediterranean0
