I take the BBE date on anything with a pinch of salt - I'm currently working my way through a mountain of breakfast cereals I found lurking in the house that have dates as far back as 2008 (if not earlier!)
I work on sight, smell and taste. If something fails on two of the three it's a definite for out..... if it's starting to wobble on one I normally just get it used that day. (I've done this for years, so guess it could explain why I don't often get an upset stomach - it's got used to coping with minor attacks of 'nasties')
I find fresh fish is the first thing to go, followed by chicken then other (non-processed) meats. Burgers and sausages last a few days longer than that (as do kievs and other 'ready to cook' processed items). Processed sandwich meats are the last to 'go', and eggs last longer than that. I regularly use milk until it's about 10 days past it's date (skimmed, semi or 1% - I found full-fat turned quicker), and cream often gets to a week beyond.
Fresh fruit and veg varies depending on the type and where I bought it from (local green-grocers being the quickest to turn, and normally the most expensive as well)
Anything in a tin last for yeeeeaaaaaars - and my order included a huuuuuge tin (which means 2) of rhubarb..... crumble and custard galore on the way for 2011 (after I get all my ramekin dishes from the kids at the end of December)

Oh I'm like you Cheryl, generally I go by smell first - know what you mean about fresh fish and chicken. I can't recall the last time I had a real upset tum, oh yes, I can - it was food poisening back before my graduation from snacks after a pool pub match (OH was playing) - given I've turned 30 now, that shows how long ago it was. I also have a friend who won't use anything past it's sell by/use by date and constantly cleans everything....unfortunately her DD is often ill with coughs, colds and sore tums.
Still on course for a NSD - even went to Mr S and resisted any purchase....not quite declaring yet thoughFeb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

(Nargle packs her bag for work tomorrow, making sure she leaves her purse at home because she has just seen CW lurking in a corner, sniggering, and stroking a wet kipper.)One life - your life - live it!0

Hya Kerri....sorry, it wasn't me doing the reindeer...though I am thinking about it!!! I know Dunelm MIll have pipe cleaners...will be investigating later this week, so will report back when I find some. I expect our local poundshop will have some...they have everything!!
Only popped on to do a quick catch up before taking DS2 off to college. Best get washed and dressed now I suppose.
I have decided to make today NSD no 2, despite being dangerously close to both Dunelm Mill and Hobbycraft today when ferrying DS2. I don't want to spend anything until Friday, so coming straight back home and doing more sorting.
Spoon, will have another hunt for the camera and get my piccies posted later....promise
Whoops! Apologies, just checked back and it was LittlePinkStars44:o am deff thinking of making one for my friend and adding Lush bath bombs - she loves smellies for Xmas and I bought her a Lush box last year so this would be a bit different.
