  • I get asked for ID( buying alcohol) at least once a week lol:) and I'm 28 but I have to admit being dumbfounded when I was asked for my ID when buying cigarettes at Asda's a couple of weeks back and this was 8am in the morning and perhaps not looking my absolute best did they really think I was under 18??? the mind boggles
LOVE isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live WITHOUT
  • It because it is made with alcohol but has had most of it removed but still contains it.
I work in a supermarket and it isn't just the till that flags it up. I've had training to say non alcoholic beers, wine etc are still an 18+ product.
  • I'm flattered when I'm asked for ID.

Once the lad who asked, wasn't old enough himself to SELL alcohol, had to get supervisor to authorise it - but I, at 35 was asked to prove to him I was over 18... it made me chuckle.

I don't see a problem tbh - rather be too vigilant than not vigilant enough?

I don't want my DD to be able to blag alcohol/fags etc just because she "looks old enough" - I know she does - but she's 14.

Cobra zero is one of the few zero beers that actually have zero alcohol in it. This has been mentioned in several posts already.

The Supervisor or Manager can't override because they personally aren't making the sale, the checkout op is, so *if* the person did turn out to be underage it's the operator that'd get an £80 fine right off. Sometimes people of 38 can look under 25 (remember they must look 25) I look alot younger than I am & when I worked the tills it was betetr safe thn sorry. As someone who doesn't drink or know about alcohol i'd've asked if unsure of age as the till requested it but once it was pointed out i'd've used common sense & realised it's alcohol free & let it thru
  • what till staff often mis-interpret is its 'look 25' to give leeway for error, NOT because you have to be 25 to legally purchase.

When i was ID recently for cigarettes, the girl on the till said she thought i was about 28 when i questioned how old she thought i was. When i asked why she had therefore asked me for id she said because 28 is near 25 ???

  • Get one of the PASS cards. Much cheaper than a passport or driving licence and any age can get one. I don't think they expire either.

Thanks for that, but firstly they ONLY accept passport/drivers license; they won't accept my SIA License (you need to be 18+ for these) or MOD 90s. I will buy a passport as it's useful to have but it's just ridiculous.

I used to work for a large supermarket and an out of date passport was ok to accept as long as the picture isn't of a person when they're say 5 (just remotely recognisable, if we werent sure we just asked if they had anything else with their name on)

Unless you need it for travel as well you may not even need it, I would just ask at your normal store if you tend to always buy it from the same place?

Just because they can say it's alcohol free doesn't mean it has no alcohol. It can legally have less than 0.5%. They were right to ID you.

Bread has alcohol as well, should you be ID'd for that as well ?

Shops can make any rule they like. They don't have to sell anything to anybody. So if they wanted to, they could.

However, they'd be deciding that by themselves. The other is them following the law.
