Why would they be wrong if they had reason to believe the person may be under 18?

Also expect in cases like this a supervisor/manger are not allowed to override a till operators decision to Id and refusal to serve if not.

Then what are they there for? If the checkout operator ID's a 50 year old who doesn't have ID what's the manager to say? Oh no I can see you're over 18 but you can't buy alcohol. Doesn't make any sense. I think supermarket policies don't make sense sometimes, sometimes you need common sense.

Why would a till operator have reason to believe a 38 year old was under 18?

Why was it necessary for a till operator to ask for proof of age for an item they themselves had already agreed did not contain alcohol?

The supevisor DID override the till operator because:-

    1) The customer was 38 and therefore obviously over 18.

    2) The item being purchased did not require proof of age as it had been established by ALL parties that it contained NO alcohol.

Do checkout operators really have no discretion to use their common sense??

I had the pleasure of working at Morribobs whilst in higher education, the simple answer is NO. Use your common sense and a manager will tear you a new one for breaking the rules. Stick to the rules and a manager will come over and break the rules making you look very stupid in front of the customer.
  • Freddies rules apply here, and I would be flattered to be age verified!

Just because they can say it's alcohol free doesn't mean it has no alcohol. It can legally have less than 0.5%. They were right to ID you.

Yet Listerine contains up to 30% alchohol content, and doesn't require ID to purchase.

I can't remember if it still does, but for a while, when people bought Currys own-brand printer ink, a message came up on the till saying "Is the customer 0 years of age or over?"

There was also something, a TV, I think, which asked "Is the customer 600 years of age or over?"

I thought I remembered someone being ID'd for wine gums.

A few months back I was asked for ID to buy Grenadine (a non alcoholic syrup) in Asda. I understand why (it's in the same range as Blue Curacao, Triple Sec, etc, so the computer has obviously been programmed to prompt for id on the whole range, including the non alcoholic ones), but it was still a bit frustrating. I found it was easiest just to comply then have a little chuckle about it.
