I think everyone is missing the point.

As of 09/10 I have a completely new card with new number and new expiry date.

This company that had my card details on file took the liberty of re-adding the card (as a new card on my account) and just changing the card expiry date.

Out of all that has happened how can it not be considered fraud to change my card details without my permission?

I mean it's my card and up to me to notify a company of what my new card details are - not for them to do it for me.

    Surely I'm right?

No. You are missing the point. completely - the transaction does not need a new card. why dont you read the above posts and then answer the questions posed to you?

If that's the case, I think you should've notified them of the new card details before another deduction was due.

What are they supposed to do? Should they go to the trouble of contacting you first? You owe them money and have "removed" the agreed means of payment (if your theory is correct).

    I think the following happened...
    1) they tried to deduct using your old card number.
    2) bank refused the transaction and suggested new number.
    3) company used new number as supplied by bank.

    Alternatively, more likely...
    1) they tried to deduct using your old card number.
    2) bank accepted transaction based on the account number.

As has been said a continuous payment authorisation is linked to the account and not to the card number. The only exception is when a card is reported as lost/stolen in which case the authorisation sometimes has to be set up again (even in this case it can happen without your intervention).

You must contact the company in order to cancel your contract.

Surely an expiry date serves as a this card doesn't exist any more just like reporting it lost or stolen does?

Have you read the posts above?

    Even the post you quoted?

Continuous Authority is based on Account Number, not card number.

Continuous Authority is based on Account Number, not card number.

But I didn't add my account number.

I added my debit card number as payment method.

It changed 09/10 so therefore the card I added was not in use any more.

The company then took it into their own hands to add a new card with new expiry date.

Also since when does an account number have an expiry date?

I added my direct debit card number as payment method.

[STRIKE]Please don't confuse direct debit with debit card.
[/STRIKE]I see you have now edited your post.

    As I said earlier...

    What probably happened is...
    1) the company tried to deduct using your old card number.
    2) bank accepted transaction based on the account number.

Let me expand a bit on that second line..
2a) the bank noticed that the card number supplied was no longer valid.
2b) the bank knows what account that old card is/was associated with.
2c) the bank passes the money from the account to the company because it understands that that is what should happen.

  • Yes yes yes.

But this is not the issue.

The issue is I had only one card on my account.

On 22October this company took it into their own hands to add a second card to my account using my old card number and just changing the expiry date.

An answer to my exact query.

Not an answer to a query that I did not ask..
