Company fraudently changed my bank card details so payment would work..

I've just received a charge to my debit card from an American company whom I have a subscription with.

My card expired in 09 of this year so on 22 October 2010 they changed the details to have an expiry date of 09/2012 when that card doesn't even exist any more.

As the card is now a completely different number with a different expiry date.

I believe this is outright fraud and they have admitted that they changed the details and are now sending over an email to me to state that they did.

What should I do about this?
I work a 45 hour week. 12 hours round trip every day.

My money I have I invest on my blog. Any questions or help offered? I'd love to hear from you.

    Speak to your bank.

I find it hard to believe that a company can change the expiry date on an expired card and the charge will be allowed by your Bank.

    I don't understand it either.

My new card starting 09/2010 even has a new 16 digit number and new expiry date.

So all I can think in regards of the company that did this is that it is outright fraud to have changed the expiry date hoping for it to work.

I see ££ signs but then again I need the right advice so I can know for sure. :D

Look on the bright side, if the payment was due they have saved you a failed transaction charge.

If you have set up a continuous payment authority on your debit card, your bank will continue to honour claims for payment despite your cards expiration.

If you wish to stop the subscription, you will need to follow the company's terms of cancellation.

    This is not the problem.

The problem is the company took it on their own accord to change my card details on their system so the payment would process. Whereas had the card details stayed the same nothing would have worked.

When even at that time the card is non existent. I have a new card with new details..

This. I believe this is the case even if the card number and/or expiry date is wrong.

You have to cancel directly with the company. Cancelling your card won't work.

OK, so you've torpedoed balmk's possible explanation, and are very certain that this company have somehow fraudulently forced this payment through and are even going to email you to that effect.

So - what does your bank say?

balmk has given you the correct answer, this was a continous authority, not a card transaction

Right I have card 1 added on my account.

No other cards are on my account.

    It expires in 09/10.

Therefore that company is supposed to wait until I update my credit card details with new details.

However they did not do this.

They proceeded to use the number of my old card to add a new card while and changing the expiry date to 2 years in the future.

The issue is that I am supposed to update the details - not them.

The second issue is that card number didn't even exist any more come end of 09/10 so they in fact also used a completely different card number than what I am issued to retrieve money from my bank.

I can't see this any other way than fraud because they fraudulently added a new card to my account using my old card number and just changing the date.

When I did not authorise them to do this...
