I do have some sympathy for you Steph but you're becoming a bit silly now. The employer is not "immoral" by any stretch of the imagination. They help out some employees by giving them lifts to/from work, when they can. This doesn't mean they're obliged to do it for everyone. Your new born is not their problem I'm afraid.
  • They actually give lifts to at least 3 members of staff I know of on a permanent basis as they do not drive...and they plan other peoples shifts around these people as they cannot drive.

Fair enough though, if they're doing nothing illegal than fair enough, but it is very annoying to be treated differently than anyone else at the company. Im pretty sure most people could not live with an £800 drop in wages a month.

he may be doing anything illegal, but surely immoral??? he is giving other people lifts to work, but my husband gets no help despite us having a new born to support?

no! where's your moral compass at? Where does it say "thou shalt be responsible for they employees car breakdowns"?

You are being unreasonable now. And if one of my employees got arsey about that, I'd stop lifts for all of them and consider who I was paying for what etc...

get on your local gumtree and pick up a banger
you will get scrap value on the dead car
  • Have you checked out cycle path routes? I know that you say it is near a duel carriage way and motorway but in his last job my husband cycled for about 5 miles along a cycle path that ran parallel the motorway near our house and the rest on back roads, he used to do 13 hour shifts as a chef and cycle 9 miles each way to work and back.

If the £100 per month debt repayment is causing you hardship, post the details on the Debt Free wanabee forum and the bods there will tell you how you might get it reduced or deferred.

Any particular reason that stops your husband from requesting an overdraft or taking out a loan for transport in the meantime which he can sell in January and recover the majority of his outlay then, or a lump sum to pay towards his taxi fares. Potential salary loss for 2 months or so is going to be £1800 to £2200 and there's always the possibility the employer will find his lack of availability a nuisance.
  • We have bad credit, so a loan/overdraft anything like that is out of the question, or I would do that :( All we need is a crappy car even if it only lasted two months before dying, but Im racking my brains to think of a way to get a bit of cash together and i cant thnk of anything feasable. I could ask my bank tmorrow about an overdraft, but its highly unlikely.

The loan isnt causing us any problems, not in a normal month anyway when he isnt having to take time off- also its one whihc is paid after a year, (52 weekly payments) and once its up (not until next August sadly!) we can then take out another for Christmas, emergency, sadly the car was fine when we took tghe loan out this year or we would have gotten a new car with it!!!! Just looked into a taxi, its £13 each way, so £52 a week for two shifts, and then an extra £13 every other week as he has to get there on a firday night too but would be ok picked up the next morning, so its a HUGE bill for a 15 minute journey!

I will look into cycle paths, see if there are any, but there is a big river which is in between us and his work, and as far as I knwo, only a road over it which isnt safe to cycle on :( but worth a look!!!

  • We looked at hiring a car, but it was £125 a week, once you add on petrol, it wouldnt be worth it. Also my husband is 23, alot of places wont hire cars to under 25s!!
