My parents charged me rent from the first day i got a Job (16) I was in part-time work and also studying at college 4 days a week, they charged i believe £30 a week (this inc food bill etc). Obviously this went up as my salaries got higher, when i moved out it wasnt such a shock in the finances as i had already been paying rent for 4 years.0

Just a quick one for you.
You recieve CB, CSA, Tax Credits for your 17 year old who is in full time education (6th form) she gets EMA and has recently got herself a Part time waitressing job, bit a bit of extra cash to go to concerts, see her mates etc.
Would you take board off her ? Or confiscate her Cash card so that you can check to make sure that her EMA payments have been delayed this week and she hasnt been lying to you.
P.s not me, this is coming from PWC.
Just wondered what your thoughts were.
Take board off her for what? I'm (not 'me' but you know what I mean) already getting CB, CSA and Tax Credits for her!
If she has got off her backside and got herself a little job, then she can keep her wages.
If she was just working and I wasn't receiving anything for her, then Yes, I would take board from her.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I wouldn't take money off my kids and I'd believe them if they told me the sky was green. I don't understand why some people have children. Of course, that's just my personal opinion.0

I don't get EMA for my daughter, and she has just started a temporary part time job. I gave her £50 a month allowance and paid her phone. I have told her she can have her £50 this month but then after that I will only be paying for her phone and school stuff. I wouldn't dream of charging her board though.0

Thanks all for your replies.
I know I will not get thanked for intervening, that's why I don't say anything really. Just found it amazing how she could even contemplate doing it.
She attends college everyday she needs too. She loves it, so I know that she is attending. Also after her father spoke to the colege himself reference her EMA they actually told him that it was their fault it was not going in properly due to some problem or other, but it all get's back dated.
Thanks Everyone0 -
My parents didn't charge me board and lodge as i stayed in full time education and then went on to uni, however I had part time jobs throughout (2 at times) and so they didnt give me any money for extras that I wanted like shoes, bags etc. My sister was charged board and lodge as she decided she didn't want to stay in full time education.2014 - This is Our Year :j0

yes you should - she is working and should get used to contributing to the household, even if it is just a nominal amount.
I had to hand over a third of my income from 15 onwards to go towards household expenses - none of this rubbish of handing it over at a later date either.
If she's getting EMA and has a part time job, with her parents supplying the basics she probably has a higher disposable income than you do. If she does not get into the habit of budgeting, saving for things she wants and allocating money in her head for various things, it will be a real shock to get into the real world.
I don't think it's greedy, I think it's good parenting and about not cossetting your child because of a misplaced guilt."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -

Sometimes its a good thing to make your kids pay their way. It lets them know what the real world is like where you pay your rent, council tax, gas, electric, water bill, tv licence etc etc etc. My parents had me pay them board and I am so grateful because now I know the value of money and dont waste all the time. I pay bills then anything left is mine to play with until I get paid next. My brother and sister didnt have the same however, they borrowed from our parents and never paid it back.. I always paid it back. They now dont know the value of money and my brother in particular wastes the whole lot of his on nonsense.
Some things are good for your kids, paying their way a little bit is worth it in the end for them. Once they leave hom, life isnt free and mammy and daddy cant always be there to bail you out when you get in a financial mess, they need to know that!Weight loss November 09-January 10: [STRIKE]13lbs[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]20lbs[/STRIKE] 27lbs! :j0
