dsl router, broadband router, adsl router - the terminology is confusing, amd sometimes misused, even by the manufacturers and distributors.

The things to understand are :-

    1. if the WAN (wide area network) port is descirbed as ADSL, and the connector is a RJ11, then the kit is suitable for use on broadband delivered over your phone line (BT, TalkTalk, Tesco etc)

    2. if the WAN port is described as ethernet, and the connector is a RJ45 (same as the LAN ports), then your router is suitable for broadband delivered through your cable TV set-top-box, or a modem supplied by your cable TV provider.

These "rules" are not hard & fast as it is possible to use a LAN port as a WAN port (described earlier in this thread) and therefore use a ADSL router as a broadband router - but this is for technogeeks.

An ADSL router actually contains a router and a ADSL modem in a single box, whereas a broadband router does'nt have a modem built in.

amb47uk - if you are on NTL, get yourself down to staples and pick up one of the Netgear wireless routers, the WAN port is ethernet and they are less than £20. capable of 802.11g (54Mb/s)
  • staples are doing a wireless router for under £20???

What am i looking for exactly then if on NTL in wireless router?? WAN ethernet??

Sorry for Noob questions, the whole cable bt thing is confusing

Do you have a Staples code for the print server and network camera? Thanks

tried the bt voyager today and got as far as i did with the 3com one. I don't think i can change the dhcp range on my modem a telewest dpx100 webstar. I can't get in to to it to change any settings only to see it's current status.
I managed to get the internet work through the router hard wired but then i could not log into the router settings. If i changed my ip i could get in but the internet stopped working. The ds picked up the access point but would go no further. any advice.

The netgear one works a treat though!
  • Picked up two (one for parents) of these wireless kits in Oxford on Saturday, they had one more (customer return it seemed). Great kit for the price.
  • Ok I am dead confused now...

I have NTL broadband. I want something to split the connection between computers and also create a wireless network. If possible, I would also like the box to act as a modem so I do not need to have the NTL modem plugged in aswell. What do I need?

I thought I need a DSL router but apparently thats the same thing as ADSL. Now i understand I could use a broadband router but that would mean I also have to have my seperate modem still plugged in?
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!
  • Damn my nearest staples is miles away and i go away for work for a couple of days today :(

If anybody get a couple of spare print servers for £19.99 each ill gladly pay postage :)

You NEED the NTL modem, you cant use it otherwise. Basically you need a 'Broadband/Cable Router', NOT an 'ADSL Router' which has an ADSL modem built in.

An example is the Netgear 614 as mentioned in this thread.
