Why do people think it's necessary to have a big wedding when they cannot afford it?

I was just talking to my friend who was talking about her wedding planning. She has invited about 130 people to the day and god knows how many else in the evening.
She has gone all out, what with the horse and carriage for £750
And her nice 5* holiday to Egypt for 2 weeks for her honeymoon.
Then she went on to say once the wedding is over she is going to make herself bankrupt becuase she won't be able to pay for it
There are alot of us on here trying to save money on things for our wedding or not having because we cannot have it. But she doesn't have a care in the world that she cannot afford it. She is driving me mad.
Just wanted a little rant.

As you can see by my sig i am not in the best financial situation, but as i got myself into this mess i have to get myself out. That is why my OH and I are watching our pennies but still going to have a great wedding. I don't believe you have to spend alot to have a wonderful wedding.

Unfortunately it seems too many are caught up in all the nice things they can have for their wedding rather than wanting the actual marriage itself - not true in all cases I hasten to add!
My old best friend got married last year and even though they got a really good all in last minute deal for £5k which included full sit down meal, all drinks and the evening buffet, she still managed to spend just under £20k . Now she has a massive £25k loan secured against her house and has had to go back to work full time against her wish to pay it off. It seems that your friend clearly hasn't considered the impact of going BR.
Weddings can be as chep or expensive as you make them at the end of the day and lots of money doesn't equate to a great wedding!
Very happily married on 10th April 2013

In my opinion that is not what a wedding should be about, but some silly people read to many copies of glossy mags and think they should have a big celebrity style wedding. It's all about 'look at me and my big showy wedding'. More to be pitied aren't they!If you obey all the rules...you miss all the fun!! Katherine Hepburn0

I would love to have a big wedding, but we cant.
And yes she is my friend, and to be honest at this moment in time, im embarrassed.
Her attitude is, o well we are never going to buy, so i don't care about my credit!!!
I had to step away from the conversation as i thought i wa going to blow a fuse.

my wedding budget is 20k but we are saving up for it in advance so will be left with no debt for it
10k of the budget is flying over and housing 30-40 of the OHs family as it wouldnt really be the day we dreamed of without them
i think if you can afford to spend alot then its up to you what you do with the money
i think it is different if you are putting yourself into debt for it i think living within your means should be forever including you wedding day which is exactly what it is a DAYThe only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50 -

I'd have blown the fuse and re-evaluated my quality control....to be honest. I wouldn't want people like that as part of the inner circle. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
