There are height regs for speed bumps.

Shopping centre I used to work in has them- their customer support has daily complaints. It's used to host the occasional car show, and normal drivers have probs getting over, depending on car, the modified guys have next to no chance....
Mine is lowered 20mm (not by choice, original springs not made, nearest equivalent are lower), and I would take it quite carefully- there is a near constant line of paint, and occasional debris....

I'll probably get flamed but who cares

Speed humps whilst are an annoyance, ARE a neccesity in this day and age

3/4 of my journey to work are by roads that utilise speed humps. Without them our roads would be a continued race track for those ignoring the speed limits.

I do not see how a speed hump will damage a car if you take them nice and slow (Their sole purpose actually)

Moaning about it will get you nothing in return. They've been around for a few years and won't go away so adjust to it or stop driving.

Many more things to complain about in life than some poxy speed humps

Don't worry, this isn't the only thing i complain about lol :D

From the posts i can see it's quite a mixed opinion as to whether people believe it damages your car, which i find very interesting!

Although i do have to point out. In the area there are no boy racers, there no accidents that i'm aware of (lived there 7 years, i do normally notice what goes on) and it's not to stop people cutting though (top of my road is a dead end).

I understand they have their uses. I suppose my perticular issue is that where these have been placed there is no need for them.
I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!

Haha i wasn't directing any of my post at you lol!

More so the OP as in my view it's a pointless thread. Shall i start one on the fact we get so much rainfall and we pay our water rates but we get a hose pipe ban?

Seriously though.. Many more important things to worry about in life

The damage is more a case of increased wear over time. A set of springs that would normally last, say, 150,000 miles now fail after 90,000 miles. Rich people with new cars don't care about this as their car will be sold before any wear is evident, instead poor people with older cars are hit hardest by it as their suspension will fail while they are still using the car.

Older cars also get a double whammy (pun intended) because they tend to be narrower, and thus even if they hit a pillow type bump dead centre they are still jolted higher than someone in a modern car who can just sail over it.

That said the thing about inner shoulder wear on the tyres is still the most worrying problem as this is a silent killer for everyone, particularly with newer cars that don't need an MOT for 3 years, so their tyres could be down to the wires, still look fine and an MOT still isn't due for another two years.

I used to have this problem with my old Subaru Legacy which would always chew through the inner shoulders and no alignment shop could ever fix it. It stopped doing it when I moved to Wales, from Aylesbury, despite the fact that I was driving the car more.

I'd also argue with your claim that "Without them our roads would be a continued race track for those ignoring the speed limits". Do you have any actual evidence for this?

Usually these things are installed by councils that want to be seen to be doing something about a perceived problem, but don't want to actually put any thought or money into it and solve the problem properly (e.g. the best fix for rat runs is to improve the proper route to remove bottlenecks and reduce congestion)

Obviously i have no evidence only the police would, but it's plainly obvious they serve a purpose

I know south Wales very well (Caerphilly etc) and the drivers around their just poodle along. It used to frustrate me so much as being a Londoner i'm used to a faster pace not people driving like they've got a week to get home

Here in London it's a rat race everwhere and speed humps definately help reduce peoples overall speed. Residential roads are essential as you are less likely to be killed at 20mph than 30mph and speed humps instigate this further by people slowing down.

I couldn't care whether you think they damage a car. In 11 years of driving i've never had a speed hump related issue and a tyre wall will not wear down due to speed humps. Jesus if that was the case it would happen to everybody

  • I avoid speed bumps to lower the chance of suspension damage and knocking the tracking in my car out.

I too have to drive over them, but at 15 mph, so there is negligible chance of damage, why can't you?

they are there becasue some drivers are selfish and insist on doing more than 30 in built up areas where there are kids, elderly, pet cats/dogs ect etc

Is it such a chore to slow down for a few hundred yards?

Alas someone see's the benefit of speed humps

Don't get me wrong they are a pain in the a$$ but they DO serve a purpose.

I'm not for them and i'm not against them. They are what they are and will be around for a lot longer.. As FB above says.. SLOW down and drive over them sensibly and you'll get no damage to your car.
