Why not driver over them at 5 mph?I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
The designated speed limit on any road is the maximum speed limit, not a target speed limit.
I would love to have speed humps down my road.0 -
There are all sorts of designs for speed bumps. The ones near my house are like a square block of bricks, with the edges at an angle. I can do 18mph over these for optimum passenger comfort. Too slow, you jump up and down. Too fast, you fly into the kebab van.
The ones in my local ASDA carpark, you have to creep over them at a snails pace because they're so thin and tall.
Then there are the raised tarmac ones where you could do 30mph over them. Obviously, these are for faster roads.
I do have the same problem as the OP as my area is plagued with speed bumps. When I was younger boy racers ruled this area but now they're gone. It would be nice to have smooth ride home as not only is there additional wear on suspension but I have to brake, change gear, accelerate adding to fuel costs bla bla bla! And don't forget those mini (raised) roundabouts!0 -
I owned a 1994 Skoda Favorit, took the bumps at 20 or 30mph depending on speed limit (and got p155ed off at people going over them at 5mph). Only thing that ever needed replacing which could have been relevant to speed bumps was the steering rack and track rod ends, but as they were probably the originals I'll happily take that as fair wear and tear over 120,000+ miles.Badger_Lady wrote: »I've been over humps at 10mph in my Daihatsu Hijet before, and the chassis has hit the floor from bounce! Car suspension is intended to deal with physical changes in the road surfice, so speed humps should not be an issue to a properly maintained and un-modified car.
Cars are actually designed to have the front suspension moving independently (as in normal driving), speed bumps stress both sides at the same time and place enormous strain on your cars suspension. Next time you hear that your anti roll bar bushes are knackered, you have speed bumps to blame.
They are best straddled where possible or taken slowly.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

We live on an estate with only one access road, been here for ten years There are four speed humps between our house and the main road. Both our cars are 10+ years old and neither has suffered additional suspension wear.0

Why not driver over them at 5 mph?
Because until you've been over them you don't know how harsh they're going to beI was used to smoothy ones that could cope with 10mph, so slowed down 20mph with a queue of traffic behind me and was surprised to crash my chassis on the ground from the force of it!
I have had the same problem from an opposite point of view too - a heavily modified Honda CRX Del Sol with body kit down to the ground: not enough clearance for bumps. Which is fine as long as you can find another route to where you're going! But the OP's in a bit of bind nowMortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Where we are,in the next village, there is a rd with these 'pillows' as they are known, and if my car is fully loaded i ie 4 adults plus luggage, then i have great difficulty negotiating these.
If i try to drive over them between the wheels, then my rear valance grounds out, do the one side over them then i scrape the wheelarch.
There should be a max height, size and shape for these things.˙ʇuıɹdllɐɯs ǝɥʇ pɐǝɹ sʎɐʍlɐ

I must admit, it has been quite amusing watching people come up the road. They haven't marked them yet and they aren't noticable in the dark!I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0

There is. Max Height 100mm, although most never go above 75mm.0
