Bad news for my grandad today, he's been told he isn't entitled to any of my grandma's pension as she didn't teach after 1988. Which is about £1200 a month he's lost. So on his income of £610 a month he is going to have to move, and fast. The really stupid thing is she taught until the mid 1990s as a supply teacher, but they don't seem to count that.
I would suggest getting him a benefit check, if he's only going to be on £600 a month he'll be entitled to Pension Credit which won't be much but will entitle him to Council Tax rebate and rent/mortgage costs. He may also be able to get some money towards the funeral payment. Have you got a local Age Concern or advice agency?
Or, ring the Pension Service 0800 99 1234 and they can do the claim over the phone for him xx~Nym~
