Does anyone else find Tesco expensive?

To be honest, I would kill to have a Tesco nearby.
I live in a very small town where the closest supermarkets are Waitrose and Sainsbury's! We do fortunately have a Lidl, trouble is you can't always get everything you need in there. Waitrose is just about the only place you can go where the own brand is more expensive than the branded goods! When I went back home for summer, I wept with joy in the cereal aisle of the local Tesco

Oddly enough, if you check the results of the latest Grocer 33 shopping survey, the cheapest supermarket for the week ending 7th September 2012 was ......
TESCO!
They beat ASDA by 5p this time, tho' ASDA usually win. I don't think Sainsbury's ever win. Waitrose certainly don't.

I think Lidl or Aldi would have won if they were included. The difference is probably not big though.0 -
I really think it depends what you buy. I find my local veg box scheme cheapest for most things, but when I compare prices at the supermarkets Asda and Sainsburys are cheapest. I think they are all much of a muchness overall, but it depends what kind of products you go for. I hate Tesco so am glad my shopping wouldn't be cheaper there anyway!0

Sainsbury's have far better quality food, hence the price. However it is worth it. Tesco have unnecessary price rises and the quality is average. Asda to me has below average produce for cheap.
I'd love to shop at Sainsbury's but my closest stores are Tesco, Asda and Co-Op. Depending on what time I go to the supermarket will dictate which I go to. Asda closes earliest, Co-Op latest so reduced things are high on my priority list.
I haven't paid full price for veg for at least a year now. It's either 2-10p in Asda, 10p in Tesco or various higher prices in Co-op. Notice there is still a hierarchy!0 -
I find I get better value for money from Sainsburys, not only are packet sizes a bit bigger but prices for what I buy (frozen vegetables, fresh fruit, tinned items and other basic things) tend to be cheaper. I may have given a different response about 3 years ago but Tesco are fast becoming the biggest rip off supermarket going. Quality is going downhill, service is getting really bad and I've yet to visit a store when everything I want is in stock and I shop daily, I don't ask for much!
I wonder how many people are going to realise just how raw a deal Tescos is now offering, I think many are still under the memories of yester-year when prices there were better then other supermarkets and deals were actually deals, not a chance to mark food at a price which makes it seem normal in comparison to other stores.0 -
I was a bit miffed at Tesco's at the weekend. I should've looked closer but it was an easy mistake to make.
I was at the chiller and there was an offer of any 2 for 6 pounds (no pound sign, sorry..) We were having a BBQ so bought chicken thighs and drumsticks, and some spare ribs.
I checked my receipt after i'd paid and had been charged 8.14 for them both, so I went to the CS desk. Someone was sent off to look at the offer and came back and I was told they were 2 different offers - one was for pork products and the other offer was for chicken and meat. What is pork if it's not meat? They were both right beside each other in the chiller - it's not like I got one around the corner from the other.
As I said, I should've looked closer, but I think it's designed to confuse people. I usually look out for things like this as well. I was offered my money back but we were having a BBQ and needed things anyway - but i'd have got better bits of meat for my money if I hadn't thought they were on offer. As it was, the shop was really busy and I couldn't be bothered to get my money back and then choose something else. Also my OH was embarrassed by me querying it and he'd already walked out of the store!0 -
I haven't shopped in Tesco for a few months and was really shocked at how much more some of their products cost. Yesterday I did my usual weekly shop in Aldi and then Asda. Then I popped into Tesco to look for DH's fav shower gel and had a look at the prices of some of the items I had previously bought in the 2 other shops and couldn't believe that some of the same items were 10p, 20p, 30p and even £1 more than I had paid earlier! I roughly calculated that if I had done all of my shopping in Tesco I think I would have spent at least another £10!
I shall continue to shop in Aldi (cucumber, new potatoes, carrots, broccoli, onions 39p, cauli, parsnips 49p etc) and Asda.
Oh by the way Aldi's fireworks are much cheaper than Asda's this year and they are made by the same company.:D
YES. I've always found them to be so. Saw some advert of theirs the other day in a newspaper which was completely ridiculous. Trumpeting things at half price or something - I exaggerate of course but 'spuds normally £8 a bag, NOW only £4!' P-taking really. Can't stand Tesco.
Asda was always cheapest of the biguns but now Sainsbury's can be said to be joint cheapest because at least with them, they price compare with the other supermarkets at the till as your shopping goes through (rather than Asda which tells you to go online and do stuff to compare and get money off) and give you a voucher for any difference, that you can spend with them next time!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*
*Could/should/would HAVE please!*

Doesn't the price check only apply to branded goods? I can see how you'd save money with Sainsbury's if you buy a lot of branded goods, but if you're strictly value or own-brand Tesco and Asda do work out far cheaper.0 -
Tesco are taking us all for a ride with their daily relentless price rises and misleading offers. I now shop at Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose and my weekly shopping is of a very high standard and my overall bill is cheaper than the lower quality Tesco0
