no it's fragmentation because you get developers using different versions to make their products (LG have used 1.6 on their low end handsets and 2.1 or 2.2 on their high end handsets (and then only ever update the high end handset), when they actually both cost the same to use so there is no reason why they should do that) only to deny 'high end' features to low end handsets.
Well I can't comment on LG's business model, but due to this "fragmentation" you have the "choice" to go with a different manufacturer dont you?
Is it worth as in cost to LG to update the cheaper handsets? LG is after all a business. Remember these updates are free, you dont get that anywhere else like the computer market.also how can it be about choice? why would you want to buy a handset with 1.6 or 2.1 when 2.2 is out the feature difference is massive. you have the choice to have the features or not (purely because the manufacturer wants you either to upgrade, or to force your to buy the more 'high' end handset)
You might not have the money for a highend handset, hence why you'd buy a handset with an earlier android version, its cheaper. Its your choice.
Its nothing that doesn't happen with other OS's. I dont think I ever had an update to a nokia handset running Symbian despite updates being avaliable even on the highend handsets. Do RIM, do Windows Mobile?also many apps require 2.1 or higher so the new handsets that are sold that use below 2.1 cannot ever use those apps. because manufactures insist on using custom 'skins' (some of which are U.G.L.Y. (bada?)) it takes then forever to update their OS (the samsung galaxy has never been updated to any 2.x version (it was sold with 1.5 then updated to 1.6)
Custom skins can be a good and bad thing, you have to take the good with the bad. But overall its a good thing its even possible imo.
Is it the manufacturers fault the app developers aren't supporting the old OS versions? Who do you want to blame Android for moving so fast or app devs/manufacturers for not supporting older versions?
Android is a fast developing project, manufacturers and app developers all want to support the latest and greatest, just as customers want the latest and greatest. Theres a compromise there somewhere.you may say that the manufacutrers chose to put 1.6 or 2.1 on lower end hardware because of performance reason but the android hacking world is able to easily prove that old hardware can run new versions of android, even the old G1 can have 2.2 and runs well, sure some features are disabled because it simply wont run them so why cannot the handset manufacturers do that? (disable flash if the hardware cannot run it but you would still get the other features of the higher android version such as the improved launcher, backup features and improved photo gallery, and added security such as the permissions in market)
I would assume the manufacturers could but its a fast paced business and they are after all in business to make money.
Thats the beauty of android though isn't it, you can do that if you want (update it yourself). As mentioned its a business and up to each manufacturer, sure they're going to concentrate on their newer products, its not like the old ones are broken though is it.also android isnt completely open it still have some compleately closed APIs, to see a completely open OS you have to go to meego (and symbian is fully open too)
I never said it was completely open.
Meego is still in development so can't really comment until I've seen it actually run on a phone though I'd love it to do good. Symbian it seems is a dead duck, nokia seems to have thought opening it up would bring in more developers but it hasn't with many manufacturers jumping ship to android.0 -
Are you sure? While iPad and iPhone allow me to cut and paste from any app to any app I can't say the same for Android. Open your email app or the gmail app on an Android device and try and select something to cut........
I just checked just incase I was imagining it but...
I can do that exactly as I said above. Went to stock mail app, picked random email, pressed finger over what I wanted to copy, extended the green field that appeared over everything I wanted to copy, copied it to clipboard. Went to Dolphin browser, pressed finger on search field, pasted got search results.
Simple. Next...0 -

So I must be the only one who can't then, on either my Desire or San Francisco, oh no actually it seems you are the unique one. Google search "Android cut and paste" brings up so many people as unfortunate as me.

AFAIK, no, there isn't. It would be nice if there was a magnifying glass method like on the iPhone, because I thought that handled the copy-paste on touchscreen very well.
Unfortunately, for now, the copy-paste is limited to text boxes and apps that allow it.
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/no-copy-paste-from-within-gmail-messages-5973/This raises an eyebrow to a bigger issue...
Is there any reason why the Android OS only allows a user to copy text that they can edit and not text you would find in an article on a website? Seems so simple can't figure out why they excluded it.

Well, I can't cut and paste from gmail or any other account. Long presses don't kick up a menu.I am so disappointed that you cannot copy and paste from emails. I mean what an oversight. Wasn't it android people making fun of iphone people and how they couldn't copy and paste in the past? Huge letdown..
I could keep going, but anyone wanting to read the 225000 search links can do so themselves.

You are sure you are cutting from the body of an email in either the stock app or the Android Gmail app?====0 -
I'm in the "Looks good, but not sure what I can do with it" camp....
I have a laptop with wireless. I can take it away from the house, work with it, then bring it home and print stuff.
Can the iPad do this? If so, how? I can't see any facility for loading printer drivers and software to it.
Could those who have one provide a short, concise summary of what they use it for?0 -
The ipad 3G model will connect to net away from home, can use WiFi in the home. There is an app for the iphone which allows you to print, imagine there must be one available for ipad.
I surf on my ipad when I don't want to get out my laptop. Also use as an ereader.
Sure others will advise what they use their ipad for.0 -

There is an app called PrintCentral for the iPad that allows printing direct from the iPad.
I actually find it just as easy to save the work to Dropbox and then print it out from there when I get home.
Use-wise, I have a large number of PDF files load for work ( the old lever arch files of the same documents weighed over 2kg), I also have e-books and magazines loaded to give me something to read while I wait for clients (looks far more professional than sitting reading the Sun
)
I also have images and brochures loaded to show clients, much easier to carry.
Of course email and web browsing is a given, with the 3G model I have a decent signal almost anywhere.
I also load movies and the occasional TV program for when I do any short hop flights around the country.====0 -
print is coming in 4.2 in a couple of weeks http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/software-update/0

print is coming in 4.2 in a couple of weeks http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/software-update/
It seems like it's been on the market for no time at all - why didn't they launch it with all these features at the start?
Maybe I'm missing something, but if I need to load a driver specific to my printer onto my PC in order to print, how can the iPad print on my specific printer without the maker's driver?0 -
it's been for sale almost 6 months, but yes some of the features in this update is late comming (multitasking) and it does take time to develop features, and it is true that with most other OS's you dont get any updates.
the wireless print most likely works on apples 'bonjour' network interface, it therefore uses the drivers from your computer but also the API's that are on the printer (like how some printers can print from mass storage without a computer), hopefully it will not require an airport express router connected to the printer for it to work without the computer being on
edit: it uses the universal 'shared printer functionality' on a mac or windows pc or can work with stand alone with a compatible HP eprint printer http://www.apple.com/uk/pr/library/2010/09/15airprint.html0 -

What unfortunate that they can't do it? First post in above link solves the problem. What more do you want, did you follow the instructions?I'm not unique if you dont believe me: http://www.laptopmag.com/advice/tips/how-to-copy-and-paste-on-android-phones.aspx
or

Which shows you how to copy and paste at about 6 minutes 55 seconds or:

3 minutes 41 seconds covers copy and paste demo'd. How ever much you dont want it to be true copy and paste exists in android.I could keep going, but anyone wanting to read the 225000 search links can do so themselves.
Maybe you should have read the first link it tells you how to do it.:rotfl::T:jYou are sure you are cutting from the body of an email in either the stock app or the Android Gmail app?
Yes I'm sure. I dont use gmail I only have an account because I need one for android. From the stock email app yes. I dont know what to tell you????? IT HAS COPY AND PASTE:A
Accept it, you bought an iphone because you couldn't work out how to use google properly;)0
