Luckily it wont be long before there are cheaper, better, and less drm'd tablets out, just like the smartphones available now. Samsungs Galaxy tab is a good start.
Samsung Galaxy tab costs more than an iPad though so why would you want to buy that??Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
CPW £529.99
£529.99 is EXACTLY the same price as the 16GB 3G iPad right? I mean – the EXACT SAME PRICE.
Except
The Galaxy Tab has all of these things that the 16GB 3G iPad has not.
Multi tasking
Ability to make normal phone calls
Ability to send text messages
A camera on the front
A camera on the back
Video calling over 3G and wifi
Video calling AT ALL
Flash
Air
HDMI
USB
Or so they say .

Not to mention you can increase the storage of it by up to an additional 32GB with a MicroSD card, or keep a couple for whatever you want to keep on them for convenience0

I didn't say I would buy it, did I??? I said it was a good start. Still too pricey for me but if i had to buy one it would be the samsung, android is the way forward it would seem.
Apple and the fanboys might not like it but android is really just better.
The Galaxy tab also has updated bluetooth 3 instead of 2.1.0 -

Actually I'm no fan boy, I dislike Jobs and his control freakery with a passion. I also have 2 Android devices (an htc Desire and a Orange San Francisco) and while they are good to use, android is not better than ios, especially when compared to the iPad. Have you actually tried to copy and paste on Android? It's a joke. Multimedia wise, ios is better than Android as well.
I recently got so frustrated with the touch keyboards on android I ended up buying an iPhone 4, something I vowed not to do because I think that Jobs is a profiteering swindler charging over the odds for his products, but he gets away with it because the iPhone / iPad just does the little things better.
There is also virtually no DRM on my iPad, I can load any music I want, any .avi file I want, ebooks, magazines and .PDF files from any source and more apps via Cydia and the app store then I know what to do with.
You must also have one of the only instant on net books in the world, vie gone through almost all of them, Asus, Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung and Packard Bell in both Linux ubuntu and Windows variants and never had an instant on OS. I think the best I ever managed was around 46 seconds boot up and 30 seconds shut down.
I think you are extremely fortunate to have found one of the only net books out there that boots in under a second, could you let us all know the make and model, I'm sure many people will be interested in one.====0 -

I copy and paste all the time on my desire.
Press finger over what you want to copy, extend the green field that appears over everything you want to copy, copy. Go to field you want to paste, press finger on field, paste menu appears, paste.
Unless the iphone/ipad does it by mind control I'm not sure whats wrong with the above. Consider me a convert if you can control it by your mind.
HaHa:rotfl:. Brilliant. Why didn't you just install a new keyboard app? Save youself a wad of money. I mean if you're willing to jailbreak your ipad to get decent functionality out of it surely installing another app should have crossed your mind?I recently got so frustrated with the touch keyboards on android I ended up buying an iPhone 4, something I vowed not to do because I think that Jobs is a profiteering swindler charging over the odds for his products, but he gets away with it because the iPhone / iPad just does the little things better.
Thats the worse reason I've ever heard for buying into apple. At least with fanboys they dont need an excuse to buy apple.
Ok so what you are saying is buy an ipad and void the warranty by jailbreaking it? Why is it when people talk about how good the ipad is its only when its jailbroken? Fact is the ipad is defective by design and thats why you jailbreak it. Even when jailbroken it doesn't multi-task properly, that'll be a new feature in version 2 jobs will use to get you to part with your cash again. Like copy and paste was with the iphone. There is also virtually no DRM on my iPad, I can load any music I want, any .avi file I want, ebooks, magazines and .PDF files from any source and more apps via Cydia and the app store then I know what to do with.
Its just a samsung netbook sometimes running win starter, mostly running LegacyOS, very fast! You must also have one of the only instant on net books in the world, vie gone through almost all of them, Asus, Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung and Packard Bell in both Linux ubuntu and Windows variants and never had an instant on OS. I am fortunate yes, and so is anyone with a netbook as instant on is avaliable for all of them. Due to the 12hr battery life (though thats not the deciding factor) if I need it to be (and I did say if it needs to be didn't I, check my post) I just suspend it. That way when I open up the lid it is instant on.
Let me guess, you don't think that counts? Well neither does jailbreaking the ipad to make it usable and stopping apple controlling everything you do on it.0 -
d123: cut copy and paste is exactly the same on android as it is on the iphone
I do agree that android will be far more suited to the 'tablet' in the future (because it can do everything it has full HTML 5 AND if you want you can install flash and then there really is no limit to the internet, plus it is far more customisable want a different launcher? fine, want a different keyboard? go right ahead)
BUT in androids curent form (2.2) (even google themselves say it isnt) then no it isn't better than iOS for the tablet, the fact that if a device doesnt have the right screen resolution or if it doesnt have 3G then you cannot have the google apps (gmail and market are the main ones)
android 3.0 is touted to solve this which is very important in my book because I see the tablet as a perfect living room device that you can use while your relaxing, check a website or youtube clip that is quoted on TV, visit the shows website your watching, share videos. it doesnt really need 3G at all, it only needs wifi.
also the argument against flash is pretty lame A LOT of the web requires it, itv player, 4oD and demand 5 are prime examples along with hundreds of flash based websites from video sites to just basic info and news sites, and as I said with android you can do everything iOS can (html5) and you can do flash and other web formats.
the only real problem with android is fragmentation as it can hinder app development, but even the iOS is fragmented now (with no option to ever update) at least with android you have the option to root (androids jailbreak) and load a custom updated rom on it.
also D123 you have specifically jailbroaken your iphone to get it to do what you want? so it is already greater than stock iOS so you cant really argue that stock iOS is better than stock android, because (one of your points) there is no option to play standard avi files on an unjailbroken iphone (until the vlc player is released)0 -

Whats wrong with fragmentation? Is it not more about support and choice rather than fragmentation?
Fragmentation is in the news currently with mr jobs criticising it and mis-quoting an app developer (mis-quoting? read making stuff up). That same developer countered that saying it wasn't a problem.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/19/google_android_man_rubin_answer_steve_jobs/
Fragmentation is just a word jobs uses to try and scare people away from android, that and suing everything that might consider using it:rotfl:.0 -
no it's fragmentation because you get developers using different versions to make their products (LG have used 1.6 on their low end handsets and 2.1 or 2.2 on their high end handsets (and then only ever update the high end handset), when they actually both cost the same to use so there is no reason why they should do that) only to deny 'high end' features to low end handsets.
also how can it be about choice? why would you want to buy a handset with 1.6 or 2.1 when 2.2 is out the feature difference is massive. you have the choice to have the features or not (purely because the manufacturer wants you either to upgrade, or to force your to buy the more 'high' end handset)
also many apps require 2.1 or higher so the new handsets that are sold that use below 2.1 cannot ever use those apps. because manufactures insist on using custom 'skins' (some of which are U.G.L.Y. (bada?)) it takes then forever to update their OS (the samsung galaxy has never been updated to any 2.x version (it was sold with 1.5 then updated to 1.6)
you may say that the manufacutrers chose to put 1.6 or 2.1 on lower end hardware because of performance reason but the android hacking world is able to easily prove that old hardware can run new versions of android, even the old G1 can have 2.2 and runs well, sure some features are disabled because it simply wont run them so why cannot the handset manufacturers do that? (disable flash if the hardware cannot run it but you would still get the other features of the higher android version such as the improved launcher, backup features and improved photo gallery, and added security such as the permissions in market)
also android isnt completely open it still have some compleately closed APIs, to see a completely open OS you have to go to meego (and symbian is fully open too)0 -
d123: cut copy and paste is exactly the same on android as it is on the iphone
Are you sure? While iPad and iPhone allow me to cut and paste from any app to any app I can't say the same for Android. Open your email app or the gmail app on an Android device and try and select something to cut.......
None of my Android handsets has managed this (xperia, hero, desire or San Francisco). Do a search on email cut and paste on Android, so no, cut and paste on Android isn't the same as iPhone.also D123 you have specifically jailbroaken your iphone to get it to do what you want? so it is already greater than stock iOS so you cant really argue that stock iOS is better than stock android, because (one of your points) there is no option to play standard avi files on an unjailbroken iphone (until the vlc player is released)
VLC player is available, as is Cinex Player, neither require jail breaking to work, I jailbroke my ipad because I could, and because it was so easy.
Books, magazines, pdf's and .avi's all work with stock apps.====0
