I've looked at them a couple of times, and I just don't get it.
It's OK for surfing the web, but the apps are limited as it's not a full-blown computer.
You can view PDF, but not Flash.
Maybe you will be able to use it for "cloud" computing

Yes, you definitely don't get it, it's not supposed to be a replacement for a computer.

What flash would you want to be viewing on it?

And with all the apps available it doesn't need cloud computing, it can do browsing, email, office, image manipulation, video, ebooks, magazines, PDFs etc with free or cheap apps from the app store which are all stored locally. The only thing I use that almost relates to cloud computing is dropbox, I save my work to it and then print it out later from dropbox.

Space- wise, you can see you don't have one, because unless you want to load it up with movies 16gb goes very far, the average ebook is only a couple hundred kb, a magazine or PDF with pictures will average 20-30MB.

I have around 600 ebooks and 150 magazines and PDF files and they only take up around 3gb of space.

There is no other device that can be carried around that can be pulled out and used in seconds when you have a few spare minutes.

In truth, it is an entirely new market segment that the competitors are struggling to catch up in, and most of the new Android tablets are so far failing miserably at competing.

  • Someone i know compared it to a gold plated spork (the spoon fork combo)

On asking them to explain what they meant, they said it looks great, its a clever design, everyone will want one, but what was wrong with the spoon and the fork in the first place.

In my opinion, you'd be better off with a netbook, just as small, just as light, half the price, a proper operating system (either linux or windows that you can do something with, without having to jailbreak it) and it has a real keyboard. Touch screen keyboards are rubbish, for the odd text or facebook update they are fine - but if you are serious about using it for business - i wouldn't bother, and agree that the absence of flash is a biggie, and HTML 5 is still a long way off

Now if you want one cos they are cool - just go and buy it!

Very true, also no one needs email, we can write a letter or a mobile phone when we can use a public phone box.

Vimeo has now moved flash to the back of the "embed" pile. Why, only yesterday I embeded my HTML 5.0 home video, in to my Facebook page so that all those people I know with iPads, iTouch's and iPhones can view it.

HTML 5 must have been a figment of my imagination - NOT!
  • The company I work for is moving in to a purpose built Super-HQ. We were told that space is limited, and there may not be room for all (every shift) our A4 'Ringbinded' notes. I have had my iPad since the day before general release, 12 other people who I work with have since purchased one (they gave it a month, to see what it could do for them).

I purchased an 64Gb iPad. Then transfered all my notes that used to be housed in two massive A4 binders, to the iPAD. Since then all the manufactures handbooks have also been transferred (Cisco, 3Com, Nortel, Thales, Sun). I use the app iAnnotate, and AJI reader to transfer my Word or PDF docs. (http://www.ajidev.com/reader/index.html)

Now, apart from having 10 years worth of notes transferred from my cardboard brain, I can use the Daily News App to catch up with all my RSS feeds, and using TV Catchup, watch all the freeview channels right there on my iPad (great for watching BBC News in the dentist waiting room for example).

The iPad was just what I was after, I use that more than my PC, or Macbook to be honest. Works for me.

I think these sort of devices are the way forward definitely. However I will wait for a decent open tablet to come out before I get one just like I did with my smartphone. Ipad = DRM.

My laptop and netbook still have life in them yet.

These touch screen or windowed gui's are just a fad.

Command line mark 2 is in the wings, just wait :)

iPads suite a particular set of uses for sure. I sold my netbook to part fund the iPad and don't regret that for a moment. But do agree, without the jailbreak it wasn't half as useful. It's a tool that I use along with iPhone (mine), Crackberry (company), laptop (mine), laptop (company), hi-end PC (mine).

You sound like another one of those "experts" whose experience of an iPad is at most having played with one chained to a desk in an Apple or Currys store.

It isn't a netbook, but in any event, can you tell me which netbook I could buy that I could use when I have 2 or 3 minutes between meetings, or while I wait for a taxi? Do you realise the iPad is instant on? As in no boot time?

Could you also post where it's possible to buy a netbook that is as small and light as the iPad, I haven't seen one for sale either in the UK or the US. The majority of netbooks are at least double the weight of the iPad.

If flash is such a "biggie" please tell me what I'm missing, I've been using an iPad for 2 months now and haven't really noticed a problem with the lack of flash, perhaps I'm doing something wrong? (I still have a netbook and laptop, just find the iPad more convenient at work).

You do know that a large number of websites (especially the bigger US ones) do have HTML5 content now?

I don't see anything "cool" with having an iPad, but I do notice that there are people who perhaps can't afford to buy an expensive tool that makes the working day easier and would denigrate it through having a little jealousy towards those who do have one.

That wouldn't be you, would it?

You sound like the newly converted jobsian cult member. That wouldn't be you would it?

People are allowed to not like apples products and think other things are better.:rotfl: Its called opinion.

The points about flash (since a vastly larger amount of websites use it compared to html5 atm), operating system, and keyboards are valid. BTW my netbook is insant on for browsing if it needs to be and boots up in a matter of seconds in any event.

I wont buy an ipad not because I can't afford it, (or attack it or people who have one because I'm jealous). I wont buy one because if I did I wouldn't really own it, or anything on it, apple would, though they promise not to abuse that power like they do with the power they hold over content providers.

Luckily it wont be long before there are cheaper, better, and less drm'd tablets out, just like the smartphones available now. Samsungs Galaxy tab is a good start.
