I know that here it's interesting in that the mums at Gymboree who never attempt to speak German are comprehensively ignored by German-speaking mums, but if you make a stab at saying something they'll respond quite positively and sometimes even switch to English if it helps. Being seen to make the effort seems to make the difference.

I've noticed that on holiday too.

The most memorable was a Tabac in France where I'd gone to buy stamps. The people in front of me were English and made no effort to speak French and the shop man was very abrupt with them and was clearly having problems communicating with them as he didn't speak any English.

I was very nervous but asked for the stamps in French and he was a totally different man. He was warm and friendly, and told me that he spoke perfect English but only if people made the effort to speak French!

Sorry to hear you feel so yukky Susan. Hope it settles down soon xx

Got all the Christmas stuff up so it looks very festive in here

    Hello :hello:

Susan I hope you feel better soon :)

I went to watch the twins Christmas carol whatsit today, twin1 just sat there not doing much and I couldn't even see the other one! Still found them after and told them how great they were :rotfl:

Went into boots armed with my parents club coupons, and got 2 big packs of nappies, 2 wipes and 2 lovely photo frames that hold 5 pics each (bogof). I spent £29.90 and saved £24.00 :D

Oh and I had a letter from HMRC and opened it full of dread (heard about people I know getting massive bills) and there was a giro type thing for a tax rebate from 5 years ago of £74!!

    Go me :)

Caz I am so glad your inspection went well, fingers crossed for the laminate.

Susan Sorry you are feeling so sick...just remember, it is a means to an end and sickness in your case seems to be a very good sign:)
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.
  • Hi everyone. I've not read back exceptr this page.

I remember my Mum trying really hard to buy us the ice-creams we wanted in French once, and the guy let her struggle then replied in English. Turned out he was from somewhere really local to us (I can't remember where) but just got great enjoyment from hearing people's efforts :rotfl:.

I have tonnes to do todaym but I'm nackered and have a tired girl I'm meant to be keeping awake. She slept loads in the day yesterday with my parents, then didn't go to bed till about 10:30 then we were up for hours in the night too. One of our friends is coming to plaster our kitchen and bathroom ceilings tomorrow (hoorah for mates rates!) and I need to finish clearing everything I can from both rooms and everywhere is a mess, and I just want to go back to bed!

Also why is't something special on iplayer. It is all Izzy wants today - mummy just insn't good enough, only mr tumble will do :rotfl:

Alice - I ws wondering that too! We love Mr Tumble (although I find Justin a bit creepy in other things he does. Did you know he also does voices on timmy time and in the tweenies ;) )

r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!
I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this response :p
  • I knew he was Jake (or is it Milo?) ... I also noticed his name on the credits on Timmy Time, but i couldn't work out who he is. It seems a bit odd really - I mean realistically I imagine he must be able to command quite a high salary (no idea how much, but he is quite a big name, so must be quite high compared to others iyswim)... why would you pay him to say "baaaaah" when you could pay some recently graduated drama school person to do it for £50 iyswim.... but I suppose his name is a big draw too.
