thats understandable though tia. It would be the same as any other substance if you wernt sure if it had caused any additional harm, but it is a huge eye opener to the apparently safe wonder drug for kids that we are freely told to give themThe two best things I have done with my life

From what I have read, fasting (not eating) plays a part in paracetamol toxicity. So if they haven't been eating for a while, then I would not now give paracetamol. I would also speak to a doctor before giving little ones paracetamol for more than a day since the second doctor I saw said that Amber should not have been getting what the bottle says based on her body weight.
I will be asking on Monday MFD, so will pass it all on.
Think I have went from 'oh just give em calpol' to 'OMG!!!! NOT CALPOL!!!!' so you will all have to forgive me.
That is interesting. I have baby paracetamol that we bought in Tenerife and it gives a dose based on body weight which I think is much better (it does give an age indication too).
But then again it is much more concentrated - Benjamin had 1.6ml of that as opposed to 5ml (actually, if you read the bottle, 5ml to 10ml) of Calpol. Which makes it easier to administer (less to spill and it comes with a little syringe) but more of a worry if he does spit it out (I wouldn't attempt to dose him again).
Please ask lots of questions for us xxxplease listen to MFD - she is a wise woman

That's interesting about dose according to weight, and makes sense. Maddy is quite little so will speak to someone I think before I give it again. XToo many children, too little time!!!

The bottle says (I went again to check just incase I had made a mistake given that I have spent a lot of time thinking about this) 'children 12months-6years 5-10mls every 4 hours upto 4 times a day.
Thursday (when her tummy bug started) 10ml dose
Friday none appeared well
Saturday ate breakfast began vomitting early am, refused food and liquids 3 x 10ml doses of paracetamol (Saturday PM spent at A&E then A&E childrens hospital and ward, told not dehydrated, viral gastroenteritis of some sort, continue with home care syringe feed liquids
Sunday 2 x 10ml doses (Sunday tea time A&E and ward at childrens hospital, again told as above)
Monday 4 x 10ml doses mostly vomitted back up but not repeated
Tuesday 2-3am screamed in pain (now know that would have been from enlarged liver) 5am vomitted blood, called hospital, larger blood vomit when getting dressed to go- rushed upto A&E fresh red blood vomit, unreadable blood sugars, floppy and unresponsive shallow breathing, bollast (? super concentrated glucose stuff) fluids administered in resus, oxygen, drips, heart moniters, blood tests, 2 doctors and 5 nurses... holy flucking shat... came round after 2 hours, that was surreal. whited out the bad bits.
It was the maximum dose, but not what you would expect to cause all this.

Surely then the 10ml dose should be for older/bigger children. This is so scarey.Too many children, too little time!!!

Tia that all sounds horrendous hun, all happened so quickly. I think the 5 - 10 ml dose has too wide an age range .. I mean you would expect a 6 year old to be able to deal with a larger dose than a one year old ... but that very obvious fact never occurred to me before now !!The two best things I have done with my life

Me neither.
Just got the laptop out, couldn't read the whited bits on my phone. Now maybe I shouldn't have.

It doesn't say that though Tara. It says 5ml-10ml.
I have only ever given 5ml but I wouldn't hesitate to give another 5ml if he was really poorly/had a very bad fever.
Although I am one of those mummy's that Sami thinks doesn't exist that doesn't use a thermometer so I only go on how he feels!!
And from what I can gather Tia - it has been some reaction rather than the volume of Calpol?
This shouldn't be a scare story, just a learning curve for us all.please listen to MFD - she is a wise woman

obviously never occured to me either.
Anyway, I'll stop because I don't actually know. I will ask on Monday though.
You just assume it's safe because it says it is.
Of course it could be that she had a liver infection before the paracetamol was given and it just agrivated it...
Also one of the main signs that google has came up with is sweating, which she wasn't doing... Confusing. And I need to just stop now.0 -
