my little boy screams if i give him any veg and i get stressed out with it all and i give in. think thats why i put on so much weight as i was just eating theyre food and giving him what he wanted. ive been too tired out to cook something healthy for me after. its gone too far though and i want us all to be healthy. Keep watching Jamie oliver and feeling bad about what food i give my kids.

I think the key is perseverence... Aimee's not a particularly fussy child, but was a nightmare as a toddler... We went on holiday and all she would eat in the hotel was spaghetti bolognaise and chips for 2 weeks... She went through phases where she wouldn't eat anything with a sauce on, no pasta, no potatoes... It was a different thing every day but I just kept giving it to her and eventually I won :p I do have a friend whose daughter was the same and is still the same now because she fell into the "There's no point giving her that because she won't eat it" trap... But when the daughter comes to my house she gets the same as everyone else, and she does eat salad and she will try shepherd pie... I'm a meanie ;)

When Aimee was younger, if she didn't eat her tea I would give her an apple or similar right before bed just so there was something in her tummy, but once I thought she was old enough to understand the consequences (about 3) then I started with the "If you don't eat it, there's nothing else" and she still follows that rule now :)
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

kayleigh, some other things that help me not feel too stressed by children and healthy eating are remembering that even things like baked beans, fruit juices (maybe frozen into an ice lolly) and smoothies all count as part of your 5 a day. Our HM pizza has 3 of our 5 a day as it's got enough onions and tomatoes in to 'count'

Also, a dietician friend told me to use the guide that a 'portion' (of your 5 a day) is roughly the size of your clenched fist. So for a toddler, the amount they need to get enough vits is smaller than we might imagine with our adult-sized appetites.

    Dear PTers,

I've been asked to do another £100 a month meal planner for a family of 4 but this time with an emphasis on a more typical lunchbox for kids to take to school, and more usual british family fayre to eat in the evenings, also with less prep involved than usual. I have very nearly built it and analysed it, but need to make sure there are no big clangers with it.

If that sounds like the sorta thing that might be up your street I wondered if I could ask some more questions about what kinds of things your children will happily eat in their lunchboxes and for evening meals, the fussier the better! I could also show you the beta version of the new planner for your feedback. Sami and aless have already looked, and the more the merrier :)

  • Weezl - I would love to take a look. We are only a family of 3, and I don't have a child who takes a packed lunch, but a hubby who does, so It's virtually the same thing :)

I'll have a look Weezl, if you like? Would love to try a few anyway.

Can I ask while you're here, I'm really worried about Ben's teeth. Couldn't understand why when none of my others have ever had a filling why his don't seem the same. His second molars look as if they are going bad in the middle (I thought they had food in them) but when I brush nothing changes. They're not terrible by any means but I fret about teeth. Then a friend said this morning that maybe it's something to do with the amount of fruit he eats?
Too many children, too little time!!!

tara is the bad patch, coloured, squidgy, sensitive to hot/cold/sweet things?

If it is coloured but hard and not sensitive it may be a brown-spot lesion, which is where decay might have started, but fluoride in toothpaste has rescued. If there is sensitivity or softness it may be decay. Your pal is talking about acid-erosion, which can be caused by fruit, tho there are other culprits.

When's he due a check up next? It might be a good way to nip anything in the bud and get you some peace of mind :)
