I always take a list these days and see plenty of people doing the same. And just recently I've started to see more and more people obviously referring to lists on their phones!
If I've really got my brain turned on, I do try and write my list in the order I get to each item in the shop. But that's only possible if you know the store particularly well. So first I might have something like "X's birthday card". Then it's bread, then eggs, then fruit and veg, then milk, then yoghurts... You get the idea! When I'm writing the list I try to mentally walk through the shop in my mind to see what there is and what I need.
It's not a total fail-safe though, because I usually forget to put at least one thing on the list, then only remember when I see that particular item in the shop!

At the bottom of the list I'll add anything that isn't a desperate need, but if it's on a good offer, then I'll get it. This includes things like shampoo, loo roll, washing up liquid. Things that won't go off that I can stock-pile if it's a good enough offer. Most recently it was washing up liquid. I kept an eye on it for a few weeks, and as soon as there was an offer, I stocked up.
Because it's fun to have money!

I couldn't do a list - until I randomly end up in a food shop I've no idea what I'll be buying... all depends what I spot :)

I shop on Ocado then if I go round a supermarket I check on Ocado to Go whether the supermarkey is cheaper and if so I buy and take off Ocado order. Can change the order up to 0020 on day of delivery.
  • Another shopping list addict here. I reckon I get it from my parents: when both my parents were retired and my dad was still alive, my mum used to write her shopping list in shop order, then rip in in half and give half to dad who would toddle off and do his bit. They'd then meet up near the check out and if he'd stuck to his list he was allowed chocolate from the checkout (and I thought they put it there for the children!!)

If I don't have a list I actually end up buying less as I worry I'll buy too much stuff and over compensate! I stick to my list so rigidly that OH has been known to write "impulse buys" on the bottom of the list when he fancies some snacks or something:o

Wanders off to the Apple Store to look for the shopping list app.....

I have a shopping list always, tick it off as I go and mostly buy the same stuff every month; I rotate a dozen or so main meals. It all gets plotted into a spreadsheet with price comparisons so I can see where stuff is cheapest (usually Lidl and Farmfoods). I tend to stock the freezers with meat around payday, and buy veg + bits accordingly week by week. I'm busy restocking the pantry with basic dry goods and tins. The problem is if DH comes with me; he insisted on spending £6 on Dreamies cat treats yesterday ...

  • I always take a list which is in aisle order to speed up the shop. I check the Tesco site before I go to check prices and also see any special offers and will stock up on many items when on offer. I can't remember the last time I paid full price for cereals, tinned goods, pasta, rice, sauces, cleaning materials etc.

I haven't let hubby shop since the time I asked him to get me milk on way home from work (cost £1) and he came home with £40 worth of goods, including a 24 pack of crisps. Pointed out to him that only 4 packs would be eaten as rest were flavours we don't like to which he replied "they were on offer". What a dork! Doesn't get that an offer is only good if you will use it.

Sounds like my OH! I wouldn't be able to ask him to go shopping without worrying about the bank balance. Thankfully he hates shopping so I don't have to worry! :T

OH and I both hate schlepping round the supermarket, I really only go now with my mother as she is a shopaholic. OH can be trusted to go round supermarket by himself and come back with needed items and bargains. But if left to wander around town by himself.. bad idea, he impulse buys £17 bottle of cobnut oil for example. I'd never let him loose in Fortnums :D

Don't know which app you all use, but I downloaded one called Out Of Milk. Has a shopping list feature but also a section where you can list what you have in your pantry. It was free so nothing lost if I don't get on with it.

I always keep any pre-paid reply envelopes and write my lists on the back. I also make sure to put any potential vouchers inside the envelope too !!!
