I took a shopping list to the supermarket today...

... and for the first time, I came away with exactly what was on the list. Apart from the cakes and two bars of chocolate that fell into the basket, but hey it's better than I usually am :)

I did look like a massive geek though, as my shopping list was on the iPhone but it was a free app, so it's okay :D

  • lol I know what you mean...I always take a list, but if I TRULY want to get ONLY what's on my list, then I send hubby to do the shopping. :) He can stay very focused, unlike yours truly.

The cakes fell into the basket when the OH was holding the basket, so not entirely sure that idea would work with mine ;)

I have tried to start doing this too, I look what I already have in my cupboard and work out what I need to get to use those things up. By taking my list with me and only buying what I 'need' has saved me a fortune!

    Keep up the good work!

Well done chums,I make a list by the kettle and only put on there what I have run out of, and take just enough cash to cover it so I won't get tempted. Its so easy walking around to think 'Oh I just have that ,or that looks good' .If I have a list and its normally a fairly short one I think 'if I can get around in under 15 minutes then I can have a treat of something when I get home' This week I have been very stern with myself as I have a trip to Lille coming up soon and I want to be able to have a splurge in the supermaret with some nice french cheese's By buying literally only what was needed this week I have spent only £5.70 the rest of my food I dug out of the freezer and cupboard.
I know I can't do this every week but now and again it does your purse good to have a bit of a rest :):):)

Cash only at the supermarket means you have to be aware of the prices.

Enjoy Lille Jackie O - a lovely place.

its sort of depresses me that you wrote the list on your iphone and not on a piece of paper, guess im just oldfashioned. im surprised how many people dont take lists, must not be skint :) i alway use a list or at least have an idea of what im going to buy, its been one of those old habits that hasNTdied hard
  • I couldn't imagine doing a weekly shop without a list, on top of the money saving if I didn't have a list I'd be wandering around not sure what to buy....I'd probably be there for days!
  • I start my new list shortly after I get back from shopping :o Stick it to the fridge and add things as I see that we need them :)

I use a list. I work out my dinners & make sure I get the ingredients. I get little enough "day" left at the end of my working day without having to detour to the shops (& they are always packed at that time:mad:).
I do buy extras, my list is to cover the minimum.

That definitely wouldn't work with my OH. The easiest way to spend twice as much as I should is to let my OH loose in a supermarket. He once went to buy a chicken and spent over £30, mostly on junk we didn't need.
