  • Ok I appreciate I may have missed it, reading it states:

"The amount you're able to claim tax relief on depends on your industry. The standard flat rate expense allowance (FREA) for uniform maintenance is £60 (for 2015/16) – so basic-rate taxpayers can claim £12 back (20% of £60), and higher-rate payers £24 (40% of £60). The £60 is a flat rate, so you don't need to record and report the individual amounts you spend."

So the answer for what to fill in the form is £12, or £60, or £24.......So my question was what do I fill in on the form? I can assume it's not the £24 as I was not on a higher-rate tax but do I put £60 or £12?

And if it is £12 people are getting back why does the article go on to talk about people getting over £200 back??

As for this thread you have rightly pointed out there are over 2000 posts, I came to this thread to find the answer to my question and couldn't. If it has been answered hundreds of times then I apologise for not being able to find it.
  • Regardless of your tax rate, the amount that you would be entering is £60.

Many are entitled to claim a lot more but for items other than washing one's uniform - see post 2087.
  • I did this for myself and also for my neice and nephew. Collectively we went back the maximum years and in total have recovere several hundred pounds and are saving money going forward. I now tell other people about this and they have saved too. Thanks MSE
  • I managed to get this for myself and a couple of colleagues aswell. I can't recall how much I got as it was a year or so ago but it was around the £200 mark.

I wasn't sure I would qualify, so I'd recommend that if you're in doubt, apply anyway because you never know!

Huge thanks to MSE as I wouldn't have even known this existed if it weren't for this website
  • My daughter has worked for several retail shops over the past 3 years and she's always had to buy the clothes that the shop sells and wear them as uniform. She's never earnt enough to pay tax so does anyone know if she's entitled to any money back ?

As these would be ordinary clothes then you couldn't claim tax relief.

Even if she could, you can't claim tax relief if you don't pay tax.
  • Many thanks for your reply. It was because it says "reports that even plain clothes, without a logo, that you only wear for work may count - it's worth a try " and "Your employer requires you to wear it while you're working" in the "Am I eligible" section of Amy's recent article updated this month, that I wondered whether my daughter would be entitled to any money back.

It does seem unfair that this might be the case for people who pay tax, but given that part-time shop assistants who don't even earn enough to pay tax, should have to pay for their uniform out of their own money, aren't entitled to any kind of refund.

whilst the MSE is very good in places, never forget they are basically journalists who need to attract advertising and people clicking thru on paid links, so they do at times write fiction in order to do so. That claim being one of the more blatant ones which they refuse to remove, despite being shown the legal test cases and HMRC rules.
  • Many thanks for clarifying this - much appreciated.

The guide says that you have to have purchased your uniform yourself. My son was GIVEN his by the company but still has to wear, wash and mend it. Would he still be eligible to apply?
