You could try a program called Trillian as your instant messenger, it's much better in many ways. You can even sign into multiple MSN, Yahoo, Aim etc accounts at the same time using it.
Re your connection itself, if you haven't already done so, do a reinstall of the software that came with the modem. Uninstall it first and make sure the modem is not connected to your computer before you reinstall. This is something that invariably solves many problems and you'd be advised to do it by TT if you phoned their support line anyway.

Talktalk got me transfered earlier than stated and I spent a while trying to find out why i couldnt get on my AOL. When I worked it out and rang TT they gave me password & ID so I could use service.
No problems since, except some cutoffs at busy times, and as I was paying £24.99 to Aol I am quids in.
Connection is 2.3mb which is what I got off Aol. it depends on the exchange, and when mine is upgraded I should get up to 8mb.0 -
been with talktalk since august but service is getting worse by the day, can send emails half the time , cnt log into ebay /play, etc now they have upgraded me to 8mb and i cant recive phone calls and wait for it , there a fault on their fault hotline. makes you laugh doesnt it.0

Update to my previous thread. Just received callback as promised :T saying they have fixed the fault. Just been on a call and no probs - touch wood. So promised two callbacks and received two calls which is good.
However, no response to email sent on Mon 23rd
They said the line had been fixed on Fri 27th in the eve but rec'd a callback on Sat saying it was still being looked at
When I have eventually spoken to someone they have always been polite and helpful :T
Pretty much all call wait times a joke (apart from once)
Soooo.......still not overly impressed but they are trying. Sent a letter of complaint as without phone for 6 days and cost me a fortune on my mobile.
Rating 4/100 -
I actually applied at the launch ( near enough) recieved my broadband date for sept. but recieved and were online by begining of august, there modem never worked for me so I bought a router as I needed it for wireless anyway.
calls workwell, I save aboit £30 on international call each month and do not get charged for any national calls, I try hard not to call mobiles as they do charge for that.
All in all it costs me avrage £25.00 a month and that is just the package, the calls and braodband are free (the braodband is very quick when downloading although I do have days were I need to turn on and off to get it up and running) and to top if you get nectar points you can earn 2pnts to every £1.00 on your bill .... so that is 50points per month for nothing so eventually I will get a free 12 magazines or other gift of choice from them too.
I must say there help lines are expensive and not very helpful though so try not to call, better to solve the problems and make do on your own.Grocery Challange : Nov.06 : Target £298.00 : ......
Nov 2005 : Pin Money £1.00  20p Savers : £3.40 Total money saved to date : £4.400 -

You do pay. They mean they are not metered. Those who use it all day and night gain a lot.0 -

The phone package was great until Broadband started to be publicised.
Now we have discovered that if you swap bank accounts/DD Payments the minute you miss a payment your phone line gets restricted (incoming only).
We will wait for the 18 months contract to finish then drop them like a stone.
This company makes you apreciate why you pay the extra with companies like BT.
Look at Tiscali. Excellent uptime broadband service so far with me. They are having a new free line rental deal in Jan. Same deal as Talk-Talk but a bigger more reliable company. Worth looking into.
