There seems to be a big problem with the whole login procedure.

I am finding that if I stay logged in and visit the board later from another PC I appear to be still online for a long time afterwards even though I am obviously not online.

Result is that even when I do come back officially some 30 minutes later it still thinks I have never left.

How long does it take before it sees you as offline?

It used to be about 15 minutes.

But a few months ago I think the setting was changed. It now seems to be about 45 mins (ish).

45 minutes seems rather long - can it be changed?

It gets very confusing if you look to see if a poster is online and it shows they are when in reality they are possibly not and haven't been for 45 minutes.

Personally, I think the original 15 mins was a little short.

It used to log some people out while they were busy composing a long post. On some browsers, that meant you lost all you had typed. :(

Perhaps 30 mins would be a good middle ground?

It's a setting that can be easily changed if I remember correctly.

    Personally I didn't have a problem with the 15 minutes - perhaps I typed faster. ;)

However 30 minutes could be a good compromise.

Is it a user controlled setting or not?

    Not.

Something that only the MSE Techie/Admin staff could change.

I am still finding that if I close the browser (IE8) and return later, I am having to log in again in spite of ticking the remember me box, I have not had to log in for years until yesterday, darned annoying :(

Are you not finding that you actually are logged in but the Home page of MSE forums seems to suggest you are not?

Have you clicked through to one of the boards?
