    Oddly, if I go here:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/

I don't appear to be logged in, but as soon as I select a board I am logged in. If I return to the link above, I'm no longer logged in.

Exactly what is happening with me too.

MSE home page suggests I'm not logged in - going to a board and suddenly I am logged in.

Also found yesterday that clicking through from an email notification showed that I had last visited about 1 minute before, even though it had been hours since my actual last visit. This knocks out the ability to see what new posts there had been since my last visit.

I'm using IE9 which had been fine up until yesterday.

I was going to say I use IE8 and have not had any issues.

    BUT...

I must say, when I first came to the board this morning (as per the above link), I didn't notice immediately but later saw I was apparently not logged in.
However I could post no problems (I tend to open boards/threads in new windows, not tabs), and could easily identify the threads that had new posts in. It was because nothing seemed unusual, I didn't notice the request to login on the first screen.

Later, refreshing the screen on the original page (the link above) automatically showed me as logged in - I didn't add any login details, just pressed the refresh button on the browser.

Interesting, I'm seeing the same. But, refreshing the screen doesn't log me in on my initial visit to that link, only on subsequent visits (after going to a board and finding myself logged in).

For me the effect is very obvious as I have chosen to retain the 'old look' on the site. So the original page appears in 'new look' but it changes to 'old look' when I go to a board etc....

If this functionality is important to you then please consider using Internet Explorer as a temporary solution. I believe this functionality works in Internet Explorer.
It used to. Now it doesn't. That's the point.

  • The problem seems to be, for me at least, is that on the main forum page you aren't logged in but if you click through to any forum you find are logged in

There seems to be a big problem with the whole login procedure.

I am finding that if I stay logged in and visit the board later from another PC I appear to be still online for a long time afterwards even though I am obviously not online.

Result is that even when I do come back officially some 30 minutes later it still thinks I have never left.

How long does it take before it sees you as offline?
