Can you use anything other than suet? Just that I don't buy it - will marge or anything work?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Erm yes, I'm pretty sure I've seen alternatives somewhere in one of the threads, and there's always the option of veggie suet.
Here ya go...

Hi Squeaky, another Q for you
Would this work with the packet mixs of dumplings you can buy? The Goldenfry ones? My uncle worked there until recently and used to bring me loads of freebies and i've still got about 10 boxes left lol
Many thanks

as a veggie, i sometimes make veggie sausage casserole in my slow cooker - would be nice to liven it uip with some herby dumplings, anyone got a recipe please???0
-
Just add dried herbs to your normal dumpling recipe. The recipe I use is:
8 oz self raising flour
A couple of dessertspoons suet (I use real suet, but as a vegetarian use vegetable suet)
Two big pinches of dried herbs - probably about a dessertspponful?
Mix all together with cold water to a softish, but not sticky dough. Divide into eight balls and add to the casserole.
Sorry measurements aren't exact but this is how I do it!0 -
Half fat to flour, a pinch of salt and some herbs of your fancy, dried mixed herbs is good. then mix with water a tablespoon at at time till it's a nice dough. I always make mine quite small and more of them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I find using suet (veg or normal) gives me better dumplings, however if I don't have any I will use lard or marg (or a combination), rubbing it into the Self raising flour (I try to remember to add a bit of salt but often forget). Technically I use the half fat to flour, in practice I guesstimate quantities and use less fat than measuring it out. I also add a bit extra water so that my mix is quite sticky and just dollop spoonfuls into my stew. They fluff up huge and light. I often add herbs eg parsley, mixed herbs, thyme or sage and sometimes a clove of crushed garlic.I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0

I use cheese rather than suet it gives a yummy taste in soups and such. Half fat to SR flour a pinch of salt and a pinch of mustard powder with mixed herbs0
