I'm looking for energy-saving bulbs with a small screw cap fitting, at a good price; do any of the offers mentioned above have this option?
Try Focus - got some corkscrew-type 11W SES bulbs there recently - not ultracheap but look really good and surprisingly bright for the small size.

They're actually made by Ring and are in a 3 for the price of 2 pack for around a fiver - but currently sold out at my local Focus
  • Just got back from Sainsburys in Burton on Trent. They had a largeish cardboard display with Osram energy saving lamps at 45p each. 21w were already in short supply, but there were plenty of a lower wattage (sorry, can't remember, maybe 11w).

    Hope that helps.

Anyone know where you can get higher wattage energy saving bulbs at a decent price? Looking for something equivalent to 150W incandencent. Best I have found so far is BLT Direct. They have 30W spiral compact fluorescents equivalent to 150W, but those are £9.34 each (+ delivery of £2.50 per order).

Philips 8, 11 and 18 watt bayonet cap and 8, 11 and 18 screw cap bulbs all 47p each and in stock at every John Lewis in the country except Reading, and all Waitrose Food & Home branches except Salisbury. How do I know? I'm the unfortunate person trying to make sure we maintain adequate stocks!

Not in Waitrose Hall Green Birmingham they weren't!

  • Not sure if I should be posting this here, but while we are on the subject of energy saving light bulbs...

I understand that the long tube gas filled bulbs (usually in Kitchens and offices) use very little energy once on, but use quite a lot to switching on. So it works out more energy efficient to leave the light on for say three hours, than to switch it on and off twice. (I am not sure of the exact length to time compared to a switch off though).

Does anyone know if this is also the case for energy saving bulbs? Should I leave the light on if I know I'll be coming back into the room is say one hours time rather that switch it off then on again?

I said Waitrose Food & Home, not Waitrose. Waitrose Food & Home branches have their light bulbs controlled and priced by John Lewis' lighting buying office, whereas standard Waitrose branches have theirs sourced by Waitrose and are therefore not subject to "never knowingly undersold".
