  • Think we might be too hungry to wait till 9. I've stuck it in for 3 and its sizzling away. I'm not entirely sold on slow cookers it was a gift and thought I better use it at least once.
  • Can I put my roast potatoes in there too?

    They'll go soggy, I think...

Um, sorry if I'm being thick, is it supposed to be sizzling? You have put stock in there with it presumably?

Just asking because dh tried to cook mince with no liquid last week - he must be the first person ever to burn something in a slow cooker!

I might be wrong though, it's just my mum used to tell me that the meat needs to covered in liquid!
  • Nope just a bit of oil. Same as when I cook it in the oven.

  • I'm not sure if thats right, its the first time i've used it, so just took a guess.

it does seem to be cooking quite quick on the outside.

Hmm, I'd maybe make up some beef stock or gravy and pour it over...

With it being a brisket joint, it will keep it moist and stop it shrinking so much....

I suppose at the minute, it's cooking like it would if you had it in a saucepan on a stove, so the bottom maybe cooking quicker than the rest...

Hopefully someone a bit more useful will come along!
  • well it was a little dry in parts but all in all it was a success.

In future, you might want to try the following method: quickly fry some chopped onions, carrots and celery, put in bottom of slow cooker, season meat and quickly brown it in frying pan, put meat on top of veg in slow cooker. Use some water, a stock cube, bit of mustard, maybe bit of wine or a teaspoonful of brown sugar, bring to boil in the frying pan (deglazes the pan and scoops up all the meat juices) then pour it over the meat in the slow cooker. Cook for a couple of hours on high then a few hours on low. The juices in the cooker will be your gravy base, which you can prepare while the meat is resting.

Anyway, glad your first slow cooked brisket turned out ok!
