What would you do with Beef Brisket in a slow cooker?

Hi,
I would make up a classic beef rub of flour and English mustard powder (double the flour to mustard as a ratio) Roll the meat in this and then brown in a frying pan, I would then put it in the slow cooker on top of some stock veg ( Carrot, celery, and onion) and a couple of bay leaves. Pour 1/2 a pint of red wine and 1/2 pint of water in and set it off on a med/ high for couple of hours then turn it down for 3 more, you should get a fab gravy and a tender joint.
Any leftover sauce and meat makes a great soup, shred the leftover meat add to the gravy, extra stock 1 tin chopped tomatoes, red lentils, roasted red peppers paprika and touch of hot chilli powder. Great with a swirl of natural yogurt.0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions. :T
Sorry to sound so dumb but another question I have is, do I switch the slow cooker on to pre-heat it before I put the meat in or do I just put everthing in and turn it on?Handle every stressful situation like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it ....... just pee on it and walk away.0 -
I never pre-heat my Cookworks one, but I do heat the liquids so that everything I am putting in is as hot as poss and then I just stick on auto. Soundgirlrocks has it absolutely right I would say and try and resist the temptation of adding too much liquid. 5lb of brisket is a lot to cook at once, why not cut in half and cook some, freeze some?Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Shove it in, switch it on

Well, my brisket went down really well
.
I put it in the sc with carrots, onion and 3/4 pint of water & put it on high for 2 hours then low for 3 hours. Everyone really enjoyed it :jHandle every stressful situation like a dog.

Hi,
I was hoping you could help me. I bought some brisket from my local butchers on Fri, kept it in the fridge over the weekend and put it in the slow cooker last night. I've just checked it now, after it's been on low for about 11 hours, and it's turned grey. I'm a vegetarian who's never cooked meat before but I wanted to make my OH a special lunch as he's not. Is it meant to go that colour? It doesn't look very appetising (though the sauce around it looks like it's come out lovely) and I'm starting to worry it might be off as I thought meat turned brown when you cooked it. It wasn't that colour when I put it in, it looked like normal, raw meat then, though I'm not a very good judge. Will it be okay for him to eat? The smell isn't a very good judge for me as the smell of meat cooking always makes me feel ill (hence being veggie). But I must say, this smells worse than the sausages or chicken fajitas he cooks himself sometimes. Though maybe that's just because it's beef. What do you all think? Is it okay to eat?

There is nothing wrong with it apart from it's appearance.
It appears that you did not brown the exterior before cooking it.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
