Brisket is gorgeous in a Sc and makes the best cottage pie with any that happens to be left over .The meat juices are delicious and I always make thick gravy with them and some bisto powder.

Everytime I cook beef in the SC - I hate it! When you slice it, it breaks up into chunks like what should be in a pie. Dunno what I do wrong!!

Hi! I'm new to these parts (of the forums), so please go easy on me....

I normally cook brisket in my slow cooker as follows:-
    • Bottle of ale (guiness/black sheep/anything with a YS on in asda!)
    • Brisket (weight varies dependant upon what i've bought in the whoopsies aisle)
    • 4 carrots, chopped into big chunks
    • Celery, chopped into big chunks
    • Button mushrooms, whole
    • 2 onions, chopped into 8
    • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
    • 1 tbsp tomato puree
    • Salt and pepper
    • Gravy granules (if you use the cheaper version, don't add any salt) - I add these towards the end when so I can better gauge how much I need
Just lump everything into the slow cooker - I never bother to brown/pre cook anything - and switch on high and leave it to do it's stuff. Yum yum yum!! It's up to you whether you put the brisket in whole or cut it up....for me it depends whether i've got the time and inclination and how much fat might need trimming off.

    Hope this helps!!

A bit of fat is acceptable, but not a big rind of it....yack yack yack! Lol. The thought makes me slightly queasy. When I do brisket in ale, minus the fat of course, it's still yummy yummy yum! :D

I'm doing dinner for 10 tomorow and want to use my new slow cooker but haven't got a clue where to start. I've bought a 5lb piece of brisket and would prefer to just cook it by itself & do the veg seperate.
How long would I cook it for and at which setting? Do I put gravy in with it or just water?

    Any/all suggestions welcome.

Put it in with a couple of inches of liquid, it can be a gravy or water, your choice. Not sure about the cooking times though, I've only got a tiny one person sized one so never cooked that much before.

Hello there - if you PM me with an email address I'll send you over a couple of electronic slow cooker cookery books I have, when I get home tonight from work.

If you Google "slow cooker 5lb brisket" (I can't post links!), you get a good recipe from grouprecipes. I would always add some veggies in with the meat, just to add a little texture to the gravy.
