What would you do with Beef Brisket in a slow cooker?

I have bought a 1.85kg Beef Brisket (biggest I can find) with the intention of cooking it with a little stock, onions and carrots in a slow cooker. So the meat is nice and tender. Problem is I am fairly new to slow cookers and need some advice, is what Im doing OK and will it taste nice.

My OH has a tendancy to buy those frozen 89p beef in yorkies puds so I was going to make my own and freeze them alongside my own yorkie puds. Surely healthier and he can have a normal size portion instead of kiddy size.

This is also tommorrows tea and I'll be making it in the morning. I trust all your advice.

Thanks
:A

Morning jules, think that will be ok, although not tried a whole bit of beef in mine yet, am doing some stewing steak at the moment.

    Hows the house move going?
    Pawpurrs x ;)
  • We had the same yesterday - but I added a good 3 dessertspoons of cornflour as well and it made the best gravy ever. I know it is probably too late now as you posted this morning, but it tasted too good for me not to share!

Thanks Im cooking it tommorrow so sounds good! Anyone know minimum amount of time to cook it, preferably on slow as were out most of the day. It is a very large piece of meat!!!! 1.85KG!!!

Pawpurrs we found a lovely house, even prepared to offer asking if neccisary. Got a second viewing and then MIL who has given £50k us(or was about too) decided she wanted a copy of our bank statements, list of debts and so on and so on. So basically she doesnt trust us!!! I told her I dont want her money so currently looking at renting or buying 50/50 with my mum lending me the cash! Nightmare!

Poor you Jules, if she was giving you the money why does she need to see your bank statements, or where you paying her back like a mortgage.
Was that the house with the steps up to it? Still going ok with your sale though?

YEs that was the house with the steps. She's just a nosey cow with finances. It was meant to be our money for now and they'd take a share when she retires! Our sale going slowly but suits us at mo!

Do you know how much stock I should put with my beef?

So following on from yesterdays request for which type of beef I could cook for using in Sandwiches. And going with the suggestion of buying a cheap joint and cooking it in the slow cooker. I have today bought myself this brisket joint:

    start.jpg

Which cost me only £4.60 from my local butcher. An absolute bargain! It is absolutely huge, and this was his smallest one.

To start off I browned the meat in a pan. Not sure if this was nescessary, but it was recommended for chicken in another thread so I thought I'd do the same with my beef.

I then chopped up all the veggies I could find. Which consisted of 2 or 3 sticks of celery, a leek and a couple of onions and three cloves of garlic. Couldn't find any parsnips or carrots :( And put them in the SC, followed by the beef.

Next was a bit of red wine (action shot), and yes I dont have very big hands:

I lied about my hands (although they are rather large), the small bottle of wine is from Lidl which I bought with just this purpose in mine. I used about this much of it:

Next came some water, I did take a picture of that, but its not interesting enough to post.

And then I added about a dozen pepper corns, 4 cloves, a bay leaf and seasoned the beef with sea salt and fresh ground black pepper (I forgot that I had added pepper corns by this stage - good job I like pepper).

It is now sitting in the kitchen cooking away on Low (since about 14.40ish). How long do you think it'll need, and should I turn it up to High? Not sure what I'm going to do with it all yet as I wont be able to use it all in sarnies, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I'll probably try some tonight for tea though.

    Heres how I left it:

Looks good but IMO you've started it about five hours too late. Reckon on say 9 hours on low. Turn it up to high and you could be eating at about 8.30.
That should give me plenty of time to get there from Hampshire!!!

Alternatively it will be great for tomorrow.

Or, covered, in a low oven (150) for three hours
