My mum used this book I think when her mum died - perhaps you could get it from a library?
Hope it helps.

They are actually SSAFA - this is a good idea for anyone who has ever served in the Forces. I send these people money sometimes - they help anyone who has been in the Forces, also widows/widowers/children.0

Thanks guys, just popped on for a quick 5mins as i havent got much time just now. Seen a few responses here which am going to look into.
My parents bought the house 16years ago from money my dad was left in a will and they bought the house and my dad put it in my mums name. The next thing i didnt want to put on here was that my mum owes over £8000 in council tax, They are letting my mum pay £10 a week but we were told by a guy we went to seen that they will turn around soon and ask for the whole lot as theres over £1000 a year that gets added on and the £10 a week doesnt even cover the yearly amount of £1000. I guess we would hav to pay £30 a week just to barely cover the yearly cost and a little towards the £8000. We are only getting away just now cos of the circumstances.
Found out that my mum is getting £2000 towards the funeral as every1 gets this and also a couple hundred more for something else she is entitled to. Its not enough for the funeral but its better than nothing i guess.
As for my dad well he came here 28years ago from Canada. He had a few jobs, some ill admit he left for others after mayb a couple years and 1 job he got paid off from as they were closing the company down. But for many years my dad was doing temporary jobs as he was finding it hard 2 get a proper work cos of his age. We all know that age shouldnt matter but it does happen. Luckily though my dad was always able to get work from the agencys. Last job my dad was last year and that was a proper job he had gotten but after the 3month trial they had to let him go as he wasnt able to do the job, but it was the time my dad was getting sick and about a week or2 after loseing the job was when my dad was really starting to go downhill.
There is 1 more thing. My dads doctor wrote a letter saying my dad wasnt able to work and this was in january but my dad didnt get accepted for disabiltiy till 2months later as he was still only getting job seekers. In a way my dad lsot 2months money. But anyway thanks again for the help and support.0 -

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong in what I'm going to say, but I do not see any way in which the Council will insist on your mum paying all the Council Tax in 1 go. It may be that they have to make a claim for it all but there is not a chance of them getting away with it. You hear stories of people getting jailed for non-payment, but this is in circumstances where they are REFUSING to pay, rather than unable to due to financial difficulties. Please please please go and see Citizen's advice with your mum asap, they are in a great position to sort out a realistic compromise with your mum's creditors which will be affordable to your mum. They will help her and your mum will not be judged or made to feel at fault. Same goes for if (for example) your mum owes gas or electric - no-one is going to cut her off if she shows a genuine willingness to repay, HOWEVER small the amount may be each week or month. Please speak to someone as soon as you can, I am CERTAIN you will feel more relieved and feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel in terms of the financial situation. Best of luck xx0 -
Just wondering if the council tax people would want to put a charge on the house, can they do that in Scottish law?
£10 a week is far too much to pay from the income coming in, even £5 a week would be a lot.
If you are living with your mum and your name is on the electoral roll as resident all the people you own money too may want to include your income as part of the total household income
Citizens Advice bureaux are the people to go to but dont you have to make appointments and wait ages to get one?

Desperately sorry to hear of your loss - my mum died 4 months ago so know what you are feeling. Definitely contact the CAB, am positive they'll be able to help you. Make loads of lists of what needs to be done and do keep all your paperwork in a huge file separated up with dividers - it's helped me enormously to keep everything in order. Take one day at a time - things do get better! Wishing you and your mum well, good luck.0

My heart goes out to you.
Just one idea... was your dad in any kind of pension scheme with his job? If so there will almost definitely be something due from them.
It could even be a pension scheme he was in years ago, as long as he left "frozen" benefits with them.
Hope all works out

Think what silvercar was saying is correct, if bills are in your dads name only you should not be obliged to pay them. Most reputable companies would not pursue a debt where the person is deceased . Don't know how this stands legally but I'm sure someone on here will know.0

Hi you said you're dad was from Canada, well if he was a foreign national i.e. he was not born here, it may be a good idea to ring the embassy of his country of birth, as some countries require that you notify them. Also it may be possible that there are entitlement to benefits from Canada that you do not know about, again the Canadian Embassy may be worth a call.

Don't forget that you can also call your Local CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU it's FREE and in the phone book and they can give you financial advice and help sort out the Council , also your mum and you might want to speak to a grief counsellor - Your GP or Library can give you the addresses.
Keep your chin up, it will get better slowly. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0
