I've just bought these- there is a section in one of the books about making your own creams and cosmetics. They are boxed so a nice gift for anyone who likes natural stuff.

What about removing mascara though, how do you do that, water surely would only smudge it around.

I use the Martha Hill products and have been really pleased with them:-

they do lots of other environmentally sound and non-animal tested products as well. You can sign up for their beauty club to earn points and discounts on your favourite products, also return old containers and get 5p per container off your next order (they pay the postage too).

I only use natural, organic stuff on my skin. I particularly like Akamuti - everything is handmade and there are no chemicals at all christymm.
  • Thank you,It is a total nightmare in these cosmetics.
  • I think that if you want to be really sure of what you are putting on your skin you need to be making it yourself - which is why i make all my own toiletries, cosmetics and cleaning products - i don't wear it if i haven't made it or i am not 100% sure that it's safe - this leads onto checking all the ingredients and sometimes finding out that a product that i thought should be safe because the products state - "all natural" when infact they aren't as natural as they suggested - saying that it all depends on how natural you want - things like preservatives in cosmetics can be a problem, anything really natural will only have a shelf life of about 6 months, there are natural preservatives but again they won't keep the product for more than 6 month - all creams bought containing any ingredients should be used within 6 months anyway - they are contaminated with bacteria and become an unhealthy breeding ground - this goes for sun creams, face creams and anything that would come into contact with your hands.

Anyway for really good products you knwo that you need to pay that bit extra for and there are some excellent ready made products on the market but you do always need to be wary because some companies are adding stuff that you might not want - other companies are excellent and are selling fantastic products. I always just feel that it's a bit late to check an ingredients list after i have purchased the product - i usually buy online because it's cheper on postage than it is to drive to my nearest shop that sells stuff that i need.

Also, if you are going to be making products, which is good fun on it's own you can make up really small amounts and use no preservatives at all, just natural ingredients and then use it up in a matter of weeks - ok it means that you are always making things but it's like a hobby, you can change recipes, add different fragrance - if you want fragrance that is.

Also i find that the ingredients that i buy can be used for many different things. There's a fantastic little book called Better basics for the home - it's on Amazon - it is a wealth of natural recipes and tips - i save a fortune by using the recipes, they are in American weights but ounces and cups aren't hard to use although now i have finally got my head around grams i have to think about ounces.

With a few key ingredients you can make your own shampoo for pennies in minutes, i just use Dr Bronner's, glycerine, water and essential oils - that recipe makes handwash, shampoo, body wash - ok the ingredients cost at outlay but last for ages and so a bottle of shampoo costs about 70p to make, if that, no probably less. I save a fortune on making my own stuff.
