I use them as well, they are fantastic and don't iritate mine and my daughter's exzema.
  • This factsheet by the Womens Environmental Network is a good source of info if you're interested in avoiding chemicals in your cosmetics:

  • Thanks,It has been very dificult to find proper chemical free cosmetics. As some companys say they are natural and when you look at the ingredients they are full of chemicals,It is a maze.
  • Why not make your own creams, lotions and toiletries - lip balm can be made easily - you can get natural colours to add to lip gloss/balm but they aren't easy to find in the Uk but available in the states with postage being very good.

By at leats making your own toiletries you do know what's gone into them.

Do you know of any "recipe" books for homemade soap and cosmetics? I think it would make a very good Xmas present.
  • Does anyone know of a high factor (spf 40+) non-chemical sunscreen for the face? I can't seem to find anything above spf 25.

Also, I'm wondering if a non-chemical sunscreen, ie. one containing titanium dioxide/zinc oxide which isn't absorbed by the skin doesn't need applying as often as a chemical one which is absorbed. I worry about all that chemical being absorbed into the skin but when you wear sunscreen every day it's hard to know what's best - high factor chemical applied every 1-2 hrs as the manufacturer's recommend or lower factor non-chemical which you hopefully don't apply so often (or is my thinking completely wrong on that?). I don't know, I used to think I understood all about sunscreens but truth is I'm now very confused.
  • I have to admit that for some years now I have not used any soap or other detergents on either my face or my body. I used to have very greasy skin which was very prone to blackheads and I tried every new product under the sun, but they only made my skin worse creating dry scaly patches in my otherwise still greasy blackhead ridden skin. I then got talking to an aquantance who had fantastic blemish free skin and told her how lucky she was to have such naturally good skin. She laughed and said her skin used to be terrible too, swinging from too dry to too greasy until she stopped using anything but water to cleanse it. I have to admit I was sceptical so much so that I persevered with every new product on the market for quite some years. I then hit very lean times and remembered her advice, having to cut back on spending I thought well I'll give it a go at least it will cost nowt. I have never looked back - save your money and your skin. i now suspect that most cosmetics being heavily into chemicals strip the skin of its natural defensive coatings and are actually the cause of problems. Equally I never use deodorants - just shower every day and no I don't stink! ( I know because I worked with dissaffected teenagers for 6 years and believe me they'd have let me know if I did! Incidently the best moisturiser and skin softener I have found is pure coconut oil -try it and see.

i have made a few small items myself- sometimes its not that cheap though although you do know whats gone into them. Lotions I found were quite difficult to make and needed all kinds of things to keep them germ free.there were a few books but cant remember exactly I seem to recall a neals yard one. there are loads of web sites about making your own cosmetcs. try this one for base products, http://www.amphora-retail.com/, or this one which I think has a really easy recipe for bath bombs http://www.thesoapkitchen.co.uk/

This site is a good source of ready made products without sls or other chemicals. They have one range where you choose which aromatherapy oils to add for scent or for their active qualities
