The show is on every day at 5.30pm.

    Watch yesterday's show on 4oD:

I've just noticed there's a free Jamie's Timer app for the iphone or ipod touch:

I will try this recipe next week. The chicken looks so yummy. I like the idea of the potatoes but hate sweet potatoes, do you think it would work with just normal potatoes?

The recipe was actually a couple of sweet potatoes and a normal potato so no problems just using all potato.

I have a friend who really wants to learn to cook. I was going to buy her Ministry of Food for Christmas, but now I wonder if this would be better. Does anyone have both books, and if so, which do you think would be better for a beginner?

I have both and LOVE the ministry of food, and find I use it all the time even although I can cook. I bought it for the OH and pinched it !
Im sadly not so keen on his new book, partly because you have to stick to the recipes exactly and also Im not keen on the layout.. I know its meant to make things simpler for cooking all at once but if you dont want to cook all the recipes you have to try to break them up. Unfortunately not his best book but I admire what he is trying to do.

He has a recipe for mac & cauliflower in his new book and it is also in Ministry.

I just watched him do a roast dinner, and I wasn't sold if I'm honest. The roasties weren't up to my lard-tastic standards and I can't afford fillet beef, but I'll still keep watching.

Not many MSE people will be doing today's roast beef (fillet steak) who can afford it these days? Also this idea about 30 minutes, yes maybe if you are trained as a chef as they are trained to work really fast in the kitchen. It would take me 30 min just to prep the veg, etc let alone cook it.

My OH made a comment when Jamie was making the gravy, he put the sliced mushrooms & onions in the frying pan and 30 seconds later they were all nicely sauteed and softened, they would take at least 5 minutes in real life.

The meal looked nice but I can't see me being able to do it in 30 minutes, I wouldn't bother with the watercress salad either, it seemed a bit odd to have with roast & gravy?

  • nich29580, I love Rachael Ray!! She's so funny and comes up with wacky yet delicious recipes

I think I prefer her series, as she's quite aware of cost in her recipes.

I agree, the roast fillet of beef would be two expensive, but he did mention using a chicken breast instead, which would make it more affordable. That said, I like my full roast with proper roasties and a billion veg :D so its a weekend jobby for me.

Can I point out, though the programme is called 30 minute meals, the run time is closer to 20, so there will necessarily be some places where they cut forwards. That may account for some of the apparent inconsistencies :)
