I didnt realise the internet package was for work. In that case maybe he can let the HA know that he needs it to earn his money.0

i LOVE this site. Nowhere else can you find someone askleslie1961 wrote: »Hi everyone,Just a quick question. My friend is behind with the rent, approx one month.£380.00.The local housing association have told him he cannot have a sky dish lnstalled untill the rent is brought upto date!
It seems to me they have no right to do this.
be thankful that your 'friend' has a roof over his head and tell him to start prioritising things in life. If he has come to an arrangement to clear off the arrears which seems to be the case then why not use the disposable income that he now has to clear off his debt.Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -
I am shocked by 2 things here (I am searching for advice on the thread title); not one of the posts actually concentrates on the main subject & some of the posts are down right rude & judgemental. Not one person even considered if the guy may use the services to help his situation (working from home being one example). Sorry to say that as a long time member (admittedly not a regular), I am both shocked & disappointed.
How would you feel if someone living in your home owed you £380, phoned you up and said is it ok if i buy a new sky contract, drill some holes in your wall and attach the dish on your property, despite me being behind with 1 months rent. And then had the nerve to get his friend involved asking if they had any right to decline?

jnm21 wrote:Not everyone wants to use the internet during office hours - how many small businesses answer emails at the weekend, etc.
Out of interest, I googled local libraries and all of them (even those I would consider to be rural) offered evening and weekend sessions, so this would be sufficient if the OP's friend wanted to answer emails outside office hours as you suggest.jnm21 wrote:Perhaps the guy is disabled & can't get to a job centre or library. Perhaps the library/job centre is a long &/or costly journey?
The OP's friend needs an expensive entertainment package because he may consider the journey to access free internet, "too long"? That would be an unbelivably entitled view on how the world works.
I'm no benefits expert but if the OP's friend is suffiently disabled to the point that they cannot make a simple journey to a library, then I can't see that they'd be able to make the journey to a place of work, ergo they would surely be eligible for the relevent disability benefit, which I understand prohibits working above a meagre number of hours, therefore would suggest that the OP's friend is unlikely to earn enough in those few hours working from home to offset the cost of an expensive entertainment package.
I'm really struggling to understand the point you are trying to make because all I see in this thread is the OP's friend being advised of some home truths based on the information given.
That advice wasn't given with kid gloves by any means but it certainly wasn't rude, this is a money saving website and the phrase "cut your garment according to your cloth" comes to mind. MSE'ers have gone without far more to lessen their outgoings in desperate times.:beer:0 -
Let's try this the other way around...
What if the tenant paid on time every month but the landlord decided he wanted to live in the house for a few weeks and made the tenant move out without notice?
My mortgage is the first thing that I pay each month and rent must be a priority for any tenant.

Spot on - that is how I would see it if I were the landlord.
Having said this, it is also clear that the tenant has been a good'un, and that his timing (in making his request for a Sky dish) has been a little thoughtless...0 -
Jeez. Pay the rent and then worry about watching cr*p on Sky.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0
