Rented house,sky dish.

  • That's your opinion but I think it's very relevant indeed that someone is considering an additional expense in the short-term when they are in rent-arrears. Especially on something which is a complete non-essential. Most people would argue that the roof over one's head is a teeny, tiny bit more important than a few extra channels of telly.

This mate in rent-arrears might be better off looking for a part-time evening job to pay off those arrears rather than spending the same time actually watching the ruddy telly.

There is a lot of "holier than thou" replies here none of which are actually relevant to the question.

The answer to your question is no, he does not have any rights to put up a Sky dish, as it's not his property.

The "holier than thou" replies are people just trying to help.

It would be wise to concentrate on paying of his rent arrears, building up some savings (so he doesn't get behind on rent should he become unemployed again), and THEN think about asking if a Sky dish can be put up.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Thought someone might need to have the last word.
  • At the moment that person appears to be you. I notice that your first comment on this thread didn't specifically answer the question either, although other posters did make pertinent remarks. Hello pot buzzama, meet kettle B&T

Gosh, it must be wonderful to stand where you do....

  • They were not pertinent and none bothered to ask for the full circumstances. Appears to me just wanting to find a way to criticise which seems to be a trait on these boards. I only looked at this thread because I rented for 6 months a while back and put a dish up with landlords consent, so was intrigued, but now amazed at the lack of empathy and understanding that most people show, seemingly always wanting to find fault first.

Oh and if I did have an opinion on the original post it would be

1: well done for finding a another job
2: well done for nearly catching up on your rent
3: well done for trying to save money on your TV

That is hardly bitter or twisted and that is the last post from me.......................
  • Fair enough. Cheerio!

    HEHE!

firstly, it is down to the LL whether they allow any modifications to property regardless of whether rent is paid or not.

this IS a money saving site, so people are trying to suggest ways to pay off the remaining rent sooner. Sky would be useless without a roof to watch it under so it makes sense that the rent has to be a priority.

OP comes across (no doubt unintentionally) that the sky dish is the priority regardless of rent.

PS there are some good sky deals out there at minute, and if you get them to waive any setup costs/line installation then you're onto a winner!
  • Hi everyone, and thanks for taking the time to answer.
I think the bottom line is,rent repayment is sorted to both parties satisfaction. And now Dean has a little disposible income he was looking to save a few quid via a better deal. Now hes found out about all the add ons hes sticking with talk talk.
Having said all that,i cant help but think the H A treated him as a naughty child. It seems that 14 odd years of never missing the rent counts for nothing, hay ho.
    Cheers everyone

You and Dean seem a bit confused. Paying rent on time is not a "nice to have" thing for landlords. It is an essential - that's the agreement, landlord provides accommodation, tenant provides cash. You seem to think that Dean owing money is somehow okay. It's not - I would be ashamed of myself in his position. Don't lend him any money whatever you do.

Dean has not been treated as a naughty child - he has been treated as a defaulter which he is. A private landlord would probably have hoofed him out by now. He should be eternally grateful for the understanding that the HA has shown him, not whining about a satellite dish.

How would you feel if your employer told you that he intends to delay paying you for 3 months, but that it doesn't matter because you've always been paid on time in the past and that must count for something? Oh, and that you'll get your money by January at the latest. Hopefully. And can you give him a lift in your own time after work to the Porsche dealer cos he can get a great deal on a new model? You don't mind, do you?

Your employer would be in breach of his contractual obligations, just like your friend is. It really is no different.
