Hi everyone,Just a quick question. My friend is behind with the rent, approx one month.£380.00.The local housing association have told him he cannot have a sky dish lnstalled untill the rent is brought upto date! The really silly thing is that he was three months behind and since finding work in june he,s nearly cought up!
It seems to me they have no right to do this. But i dont know to much about the law regarding rented property.
The other thing is that the sky deal saves him another 15.00 per month.
Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Even if his rent was paid up to date a LL ( private or HA ) is not obliged to agree to a sky dish being affixed to the property

The "silly thing" is that your mate put himself at risk of eviction by having more than 2 months rent unpaid. If he continues to have rent outstanding/paid late he may still be running a risk of that happening, in which case he would be having to take down any sky dish and making good the holes.

Does your mate have a "right" to not pay rent on time and instead spend his funds on unnecessary TV gear?

Flogging his flatscreen telly may help him clear his rent debts. ;)

T's have to prioritise their rent payments or they risk losing the roof over their head.
  • Thanks for your prompt replies.Just to put a little more flesh on the bones.
A fixed increase in rent has been agreed, debt will be cleared by jan 2011.Dean has rented the house for 16 years now and had never missed a payment till feb this year, while unemployed. The block is full of other peoples dishs. And moving to sky from talk talk would bring in a saving of 15.00 per month! for an outlay of less than 20.00.

How much would Dean save in total by having neither talktalk nor sky?

Sky basic bundle is £19.99 and there is a £60 set up fee and you need to pay a months rental in advance, total outlay £80 on booking sky. If the dish needs extra cabling or needs to be placed high up, that'll cost an extra £25 for install.

That said, you'd be surprised how many folks call me at sky, pay off a whopping debt where we've cut off their services, and order extra stuff...course we don't care...you're supposed to be the responsible one...
