This is weird - everyone is receiving £56 PLUS or MINUS £2 - How exactly have they calculated the amounts owed ?

This is what the 'gas sculpting thread' has been trying to sort out, it has been running since 2008 to ensure that all customers received their refunds, not just those of us who received 'goodwill' payments in 2008 ;)

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/822299 from post #1478

It would be really useful to know posters month of joining npower (anniversary date) as well as the amount received because the calculations haven't been made clear, and requests for an explanation seem to be ignored ;)

I am so confused. We have been with Npower since May 2002, have been sent a letter to take to PO for about £40 but when I went through my bills it looks as if we're owed nearer £100 with gas charges alone, nevermind VAT and interest. How do I get a more accurate figure though? My workings out are not quite spot on to the anniversary date of when we joined. What should I do?

Have a read of my posts on this thread from #69 onwards. It may help you understand.

Briefly the refunds are due to 2 changes npower made in 2007, namely 1st May and 1st November.

The two changes adversly affected accounts over a wide period from around June 2006 to October 2008. The highest overcharge occurred for the calendar year 1/3/2007 - 29/2/2008. The amount overcharged depends on the date you joined npower, the amount of gas you used and the price you were charged for the gas.

npower, we think, are only refunding for a period of one year and using customers start dates to calculate the year. Thus if you joined npower on 3/8/2006 then npower would calculate the overcharge from 3/8/2006 - 2/8/2007. However there would be a much bigger overcharge for the year 3/8/2007 - 2/8/2008 for a customer who was also with npower for that period. It is suspected that in these examples npower are not refunding fully.

To establish if customers are being treated fairly we need to know the date you joined npower, how long you were a customer with them and what they have refunded you. Also if available how much gas you use in a year on average.

Believe me, the above is the basic short version.

sammyw. A rough calc is £66.00 for a join date of 1/5. That would be the maximum. VAT & int. to be added to this.

Don't worry sammyw, I suspect npower like to confuse all of us hoping their tactics will go unnoticed :(

The letters they are sending out should have included how they calculated the refunds.

The npower representative on this site could end all speculation (maybe) I emailed customer services for an explanation and the Brighter energy debate 3 weeks ago but the silence only adds to my belief that some customers are not receiving the correct refund.

I may be wrong - but from what I gather - this refund is purely on gas, rather than electricity ?

Yes the overcharge affected the gas bills only, they are repaying the overcharge plus vat and interest.

My time with Npower was a mere 2 years (2006 - 2008) - with an average gas bill of £26 - but they have offered me £57 compensation, which says something for their calculations
What interest rate are they using ?
