I think the problem with lollipop ladies is the unpredictability. There is no equivalent of the amber light phase and they don't all follow an identical, predictable, procedure.

For example one of my locals will stop traffic as soon as a single child wants to stop. Some will wait until they have gathered a small crowd, which I guess makes them more visible, but will increase the risk of a child deciding to go it alone. Some stop the road for all adults, some for no adults, some only the elderly.

Some also don't take into account stopping distances which seems to be the bone of contention here.

The "Scottish Wave" as I call it. I'm sure others have names for it too.
When travelling down impossibly narrow roads in the highlands, because going past a car in the opposite direction at the very least involves slowing down, quite often pulling to one side and sometimes reversing , a nice cheery wave is always forthcoming once they pass by.

    .

I thought the 'amber' phase was the lollipop lady walking one pace into the road and putting out her pole at a 45deg angle.

    This made me smile.

A while ago I was on the motorway, it was jammed solid due to an accident or something. All 3 lanes were queueing patiently, inching forward ever so slowly, as you do.

We noticed some cars zooming up the hard shoulder. Had a little grumble to ourselves, tsk tsk, etc. but kept on queueing patiently.

About a mile or so further up, there was a police car parked on the hard shoulder, walking down this long line of cars who decided to use the hard shoulder and had now been stopped, calmly booking each and every one of them. Ah, patience is a virtue :-)

Some of my local ones just shove the thing out from the footpath, horizontally at windscreen height. Great fun when you're on a downhill with a transit van 2 feet off your !!!!, even though I'd only be doing 20mph or so it's still pretty much impossible to avoid if they leave it until the last second. I'm sure it's deliberate since hitting the lollipop is up there with running someone over on a zebra crossing in terms of trying to argue it wasn't your fault.

Yet another reason why I run a dashboard camera.

I liked the person who stopped me as I was pulling to a parking space so they could kick broken glass out of my way- was very considerate.

In car parks I like the people who give you their tickets for the pay and display machine, and I also do likewise. If nobody is available I will stick it over the coin slot for someone to find.

This seems to be particularly well appreciated when I give the ticket away in the car park closest to A&E at the hospital.

Me too, until the local council decided it was an offence to do so and made it so you had to put the numbers in your car reg into the machine before you could buy your ticket, or which parking bay you were in.Tight bastids.

I also do this . Carparks are so overpriced sometimes. It's nice to be on the receiving end of it too.

I like it when people wait for me to pull out of a parking space, rather than see me trying to pull out and drive past.

I also like it when yourself and another driver have seen the same parking space and you are both happy to let the other one take it. It's nice if you get to take it, but also a nice feeling knowing you have done a good thing if the other person takes it :)

Coming from one of those New roundabout filled towns . I definitely like people who signal there intentions ,even if slipping left.
