culling begins...

6000 at wirral council.

& they forecast future cuts & less favourable terms.

What will that mean for services?

I don't know how many staff this council has in total, so can't discuss what % of staffing this is. Still seems a high figure though.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Nearly 6,000 Wirral Council staff are being asked to consider leaving their jobs in an attempt to save money.
A wild stab in the dark, I'd say they had around 6,000 staff. You need to learn to read around the negative BBC spin.

It is quite clearly stated, if you had bothered to read to the bottom. The offer is being made to all staff except those working in schools.

That makes it even worse 100% cull in some private sectors.

Has anyone asked where will all these workers go? Cleaning toilets perhaps?

Gone is the Track Suit Inclusion Project, with regular Workshops on Employability and Perm Taming.
  • No more drug coordinators.
No more "feeling good about your free house and benefit" community support workers.
No more ethnic diversity communications officers.

And nothing of value was lost.

Perhaps some could set up their own businesses and contribute to the country's wealth. Others will get work with private sector employers.

read the damn article, would you?

It does not say Wirral will lose all its staff. It is asking all its staff if they are interested in voluntarily redundancy, a perfectly normal exercise when organisations are looking at making cutbacks.

Sometimes I think independent thoughts and a critical faculty are completely missing on MSE.

I know somebody who has worked for the public sector forever... well, 20-25 years. They'd opt for it as I think they get 2-3 years' pay if they're made redundant. And 2-3 years' pay would pay off their mortgage and give them £30k in their pocket .... and they could then find some other little minimum wage job locally to fill in their time.... in fact, I bet if they'd read the Wirral story they'd be hoping it'd be a choice for them. The thing is their job is essential, so if they left they'd have to be replaced.... but given the choice...

It depends on your situation/pay/location/age whether or not redundancy's a nice little "get out early" bonus.

Choosing your career because you might eventually get a healthy redundancy payout 20 years later is, IMO, a bit mental.

You say that but when you hear all the stories about council workers six months, six off due to some spurious medial condition and then getting >£100k of tax payers money to pay off their mortgage it does make it quite attractive.

Those days are well and truly over now though.
