Thanks ladies, I just never thought of trying to grow salad-y things in winter !

Plenty of lettuces will grow to full size over winter. I am growing winter gem, winter density and swiss chard all of which will happily grow in a pretty small area. ;)
  • Really? I am just getting into this gardening lark. My back garden is mostly north facing though. Do I need to use the greenhouse?

I am tempted to try a small amount of lettuce on my kitchen window sill, if I can retrieve the bag of compost from under the car boot sale mountain in the garage,

Annie - great news both about job and new hunk :)

Am really cheesed off today as had to take DS12 shoes that we bought for school in Sept, back to John Lewis, as they had fallen to pieces. It cost me a fortune in diesel and parking, then to top it off they admitted it was a problem and they had had loads returned, gave me a refund so I then had to take him after school to buy a new pair!! Which cost me in time too. So most of my day has ended up being taken up on a pair of shoes.

Have been asked by DD4 school to help oversee the ethos and values group and help create a stunning set of displays to show the schools values. Must admit to having no inspiration at all, other than to say I felt it should be heavily focussed on not spending money!!

annie56 - so glad things are turning round for you at the garage and that you're back in work again. Everything seems to be looking more positive for you now. Sounds as even the darker nights and the colder mornings can't beat you down. Hope the divorce goes through smoothly next week.

Regarding making stock, throw the cooked chicken carcass (or cooked joint bones) in some water (enough to cover), add a chopped onion, couple of sticks of celery and a chopped carrot and simmer gently, covered with a lid for an hour. Strain off the solids and let the liquid cool. If it's a good thick stock it will set to a jelly which can be frozen until needed for making soups. If your butcher has any pigs trotters, throw in one of these as well as that will really give you a nice gelantinous stock.

Shouldn't need the greenhouse but I do sow cut and come agains in there now and they are mature very early in the year. Lettuce plants don't need much sun and will be fine in a north facing garden. They prefer less sun in the summer as too much willl cause them to bolt and turn bitter.
  • Housework :D .... my motto on that is 'Clean enough to be healthy, mucky enough to be happy'

When dd's were tiny, I had a very house proud and germ-concious friend - all pets were banned as being dirty, disease ridden fleabags, all soft toys were boil washed every week and all the plastic-y things were doused with milton fluid every evening and - she only allowed them to 'play in the garden' if they didn't stray off the large piece of carpet that she laid down on the lawn for 'outside play' . . . .her little dears were whinney, asthmatic, runny nosed and sickly - caught every bug going and were constantly at the doctors.

On t'other hand - dd's grew up in a normal house - a pretty OS childhood with lots of pets, made mud pies in the garden in all weathers and their toys only got washed when there was visible dirt on them - still caught colds and bugs but generally speaking much healthier and unfussy.

Life's too short to spend it doing housework! and I believe in leaving something for the next generation so I'm going to bequeath my undone housework :)

thankyou for that. blue be fine for the boys but was hoping there was cream or pink.

we also don't have an asda but will go to one when on mainland. what are the 2 for £3 ones likes. which colours do they come in please. as £1.50 each this might be a better option for me than trying to get to ikea. which i not even to sure where it is in bristol, lol.

I got cream and pale blue from our Ikea and there were red an some other colour I cannot remember. They are lovely and soft, so far I made 2 cosey toes for Dgs and a padded cushion for his highchair and still got 3/4 of the first one left.

I got very angry today at Mr T, all the small trolleys have mysteriously disappeared and its either a hand basket or the deep trolleys. Apparently they have all been stolen or spirited away, no one knows:mad::mad::mad: No they havent, they are forcing us to use the big trolleys in the hope that we will be stupid enough spend more. No one would steal hundreds of one size of trolley - I am incensed and about to mail Mr t.

ps this is very unusual for me to really get mad, I am quite a calm person.
