Just finished catching up with the last 6 or so pages of this thread...glad for Sammy that things seem to be improving...and way to go 'Annie56'. I'd much prefer own-grown veg to a boquet of flowers...and a man who offered me knobbly carrots rather than one who drove a flash car and fancied himself.

Glad to see Ceridwen posting regularly and would like to see Frugalista back to posting too and anyone else who hasn't posted for a while.

Congrats to all who have got jobs and well wishes to those going for interviews/feeling under the weather/facing troubles of one sort or another.

It's freezing here this evening. DD asked, nay, begged for the heating to go on...she has a thick cricket jumper on, a huge old cardi of mine on top of that, a hot water bottle hugged to her body and she is still cold. However, i said no. Maybe i'm a bit mean but bwe only got in this evening and in a few hours time we will both be in bed, i'm sure we can manage till then.

Speaking of being organised for christmas I have one of the boys last presents to get from argos tomorrow and then the boys are sorted

MIL has requested an autobiography so that will be bought from waterstones tomorrow as we have high street gift vouchers and they accept them. Were doing well, we should have enough vouchers to but remaining family presents, so this year no credit card bill!

OH got a bonus of £30 in HSGV on monday so he bought himself a cd and were going to use £10 of it in wilkinsons on wrap paper, cards and batteries. Usually buy cards and paer in the sales but didnt have spare cash this year and my Dad died so never really got around to shopping.

So hope argos have the Ben 10 figure I need!

Hi Jackie :hello: It's really just a poncey word for seedlings of veg or salad plants. ;)

Edited to add.... a more elaborate explanation. :D
  • I realised that! :p But I was wondering how to grow them at this time of the year. Thanks for the link, I'll go have a nosey. :)

    :p:p:p

Most seedlings (though certainly not all) will germinate to micro green level as long as it's done in a warm place. I don't think they're worth the trouble personally and not an economical use of a packet of seeds. Cress would be a better option. :D

'Tis just my own personal take on this - but I would say that its possible to grow any green veg (cabbage, spinach, lettuce, mixed spicy salads, etc) to just a few inches high level (rather than to full-grown standard) and just get out the scissors and chop them off at an inch or so from the soil.

With luck (depending on the variety) they will grow again and there will be one or two more "cuttings" from them. I had a go at the pea shoots recently and think I must have had a couple more cuttings from them - so will be having another go at that for instance.

I have read a coupla "warning" type comments on some websites about using standard seeds (rather than organic seeds). My personal take is organic anything is ALWAYS better - but that its possible to grow any microgreens that don't involve eating the "starter" (ie beansprouts) - even if a conventional (ie non-organic) packet of seeds is used. I would just be insistent personally that any type of beansprouts (eg mung bean sprouts, lentil sprouts, etc) IS from organic pulses (because one DOES eat the "starter" "seed" in those cases) - but I would imagine something like mixed spicy salad leaves, cabbage, etc is okey to eat as a microgreen even from "standard" seeds if need be because one isnt eating the seed itself (and anything its been sprayed with......).

    Aw..go on Mardatha ...dare ya'...double dare ya':D

Anyways...theres these here types of lettuce that say they grow in colder conditions...I've not got round to trying them yet....but go on now gal' - winter "strains" of lettuce....
  • Thanks ladies, I just never thought of trying to grow salad-y things in winter :o beansprouts are my limit, and Swan and meanmarie persuaded me they were easy to do in a jar, and I am actually trying some mung beans out just now. I have loads of seeds leftover from the BBC dig in so I might try the salad in the boy's playroom as it has a lovely south facing aspect. Nothing ventured and all that, and it might make DS2 try something else green, he is as bad as Fred!!!
